I am starting to get the itch to do some carving.
I really want to learn how to carve Wood Spirits.
I have seen several books and all seem to get pretty good reviews.

I am betting that some of our carvers would have some suggestions on the best book to get started?

Re: Book suggestions

Klingspor offers carving class. We also have some carvers on this site, Woodchuck for example. He lives in Wilson. Videos are OK but I think you will learner more quicker by working with someone experienced.

I know that they (North Carolina Woodworker members) had a carving party in Charlotte. Maybe we can get one up around the Triangle. Anyone want to take the lead?

Re: Book suggestions

Michael,

I've never purchased any books on spirit carving but do know there are some videos on spirit carving on Youtube, like Tony said. Another good source of ideas and information is the forum at Woodcarvers Illustrated, /www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum. Lots of good folk and helpful ideas.

Re: Book suggestions

Hmmmmm..interesting...
Youtube is starting to get more common in my life.

I am putting together a mallet this weekend.
I will also do some browsing and see what I come up with.

One other question...
I am putting together a couple of basic gouges to get started.
I was looking at the Pfeil but I saw some people say that it is a great gouge but tends to have trouble with harder wood.
I am also looking at a couple of Two Cherrys gouges.

Any suggestions?

Re: Book suggestions

Both Pfeil and Two Cherry are quality products. I have friends that use them and have never heard of a problem. The main issue, as with any carving tool, is to make sure they are as sharp as they can be. It makes carving a lot easier.

The Triangle Woodworkers Association has several carvers within its ranks. Paul Rolfe from Klingspor will be speaking about carving at the June meeting. Also has a workshop planned as well, though with a limited number of club members.

There is also a member who does wood spirit carving, and has shared several of her works at various show and tells. Another option to consider.
