I currently have a piece of junk HF lathe (14x40 with disc sander)... There is no center point, it bows and it just a piece of junk. I am wanting to get a new lathe. The main purpose for the lathe will be pens. I dont want to put to much money into one. $200-$250 tops. Any suggestions?

Re: What lathe to buy....

Forgive me please - for asking this but what is the difference between the "mini" and the "midi" lathes? Is "MIDI" short for something that I am not getting

Re: What lathe to buy....

I don't know if there is a formal definition, but I think of a mini as < 10" diameter capacity and may not allow for a bed extension (I think some do, but are generally not powered for it). At or under 1/2 HP (though MIDIs seem to start at 1/2 HP). Kind of a cross over term also; mini has a less vague meaning in metal spinning.

To the original poster - I would look at the TurnCrafter stuff from PSI via Amazon (free shipping). I have the Rockler equivalent (same casting) and I am pleased with it. I think there is a slight variance in the VS motors; PSI had some complaints a while back but I have read it got better. I think VS is important for small spindle work. Though most of it is high speed, roughing, detail turning, sanding and burnishing have optimal speeds that are not the same (IMO).

Heard a rumor that Doug Robinson has a jet mini he is looking to deal on.
