We are building a 100 seat picnic shelter at a church and we are using 30'+ microlams - we have to cut about 2' off and I decided that I would bring a piece home and cut a block out and see what it would look like if I would turn it - this is what I came up with - That is a piece of the Micro beside of the turning

I applied BLO and four coats of Satin poly - I am going to stain a few to see what they will look like and I have thought about sitting some in some dye to see if it will soak the dye up - What do all of you think - give me some feed back - I can get at least six-seven more pieces of the micro = I think - I do know of four pieces 2' long

That looks pretty cool just the way it is. Very interesting to see what people can do with different materials. Steve

Phillip
That is a cool looking turning! You could glue several thicknesses together to make bowl blanks.
I think the dye will work great, can't wait to see it!

Re: What do you think about this

Man I think that stuff looks terrible, you should send it this way so I can turn burn it for you. Seriously I love the way this stuff looks turned, I have had my eye out for some for awhile now! Try some aniline on it, or some airbrushing they look awesome dyed.

Re: What do you think about this

Awesome, I turned a bowl out of Glulam a while back. It was one of the most difficult bowls I've turned dues to all the glue and wildly oriented grain. But the results were very cool. It's one of the keeper bowls, and usually draws the most attention out of my collection.
That Microlam is really cool looking, I guess it is using treated wood laminations by the color. Looks very similar to Diamondwood to me but with thicker lamination.

If it's free roll with it, it looks good.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: What do you think about this

Very nice!

I saw a guy on TV a few years ago that used small cut offs from marine plywood and stacked them and glued them to create stock. Marine ply has no voids and thin veneers. He was power carving, rather than turning, but getting that same effect. Makes zebrawood look staid. Anyway, that is another source for this type of stock

Re: What do you think about this

That is great looking stuff. Should turn some wonderful items. I would be very careful with the dust. No telling what chemicals are in there.

BTW - I would buy some off of you if there is more available.

I meant to mention that when I related the info about the guy power carving stacked/glued marine plywood. He had serious DC and respiration gear.

Re: What do you think about this

Very cool Phillip. when my shop was built there was a microlam cutoff I was going to save for turning experimentation, now I am sorry I did not. I guess I will just have to keep my eyes open for more

Re: What do you think about this

Cool looking turning
You should try cutting some at different angles, before turning

I will see what I can find out about the chemicals - If I am not mistaking I believe all it is - is Poplar ply glued together and milled to make the MicroLam

MY brother - I will give you some when I bring out the bottle stopper kits - I got at least six more 2' pieces today - I am going to keep one and give the rest away if anyone wants one - they didn't cost me anything
