What do you turners use for a tool rest when doing outboard work?

Re: Turning Question

Larry, I am going to move your thread to the woodturning forum in hopes you'll get better exposure there.

Re: Turning Question

Hey Larry, what kind of lathe do you have? I haven't had to go outboard on mine yet since it has a 20" swing, but if I do I'll have to use a floor mounted rest. The HF and Jet lathes have a rotating headstock and a special tool rest extension. I used to have the Jet1236 and that method worked ok. Others will have to chime in about their experiences. BTW, what are you trying to turn?

Re: Turning Question

Bob, A few days ago I ordered a Jet 1642EVS (Hasn't arrived Yet). The tail stock holder slides off and the motor and head stock will slide to the right end for out board turning. I want to do more bowl turning and I've had on my to do list for some time a pie crust table that will require out board turning and a really slow speed.

Re: Turning Question

Ok, works like the PM. Unfortunately, the PM outboard stand is expensive ($500). Might want to look into a local machine shop version.

Re: Turning Question

I have seen pictures of some that were made from a tire rim and steel pipe.
Do a search on google for "Freestanding Outboard Turning Tool Rest" and it should come up with a link to the forum on AAW where they discuss the process in detail.
Hope this helps.
Mike

Re: Turning Question

I made a weighted bottom with 2 water pipes with holes drilled every 1/4 of an inch and an old rest from another lathe. I have found with holes in both pieces of pipe, it is very easy to adjust and gives you a lot of adjustment. I will take a picture this even and give you an idea.

Regards,
Chris Brittain
