Turning class
Spent all day at Klingspor (sp?) learning to turn. Let me tell you, I have a lot more to learn. But I loved it, I suck at it, but I loved it. Time to shop for a lathe.

Yep, slip zoom to the botom you will go. Enjoy the ride, it's the most fun you can have woodworking.

Re: Turning class
Instructor said I'm too tense, to relax. That and I tend to hurry too much. I'm headed to Durham to look at a used Craftsman lathe this afternoon. Just want something cheap to practice on. After I get better at it, then I can justify the $$$ for a better lathe.
Now to locate wood and projects to make. I'll never look at trees the same again.

Re: Turning class
Rob you are on the same down hill slide as me. The only problem I see is there are only 24 hours in a day.

Re: Turning class
Wood, I'm assuming Lowe's Home Improvement won't have good wood for practicing. I guess I could rip some 2X4's in half and practice on that. But I'm going to start keeping an eye out for downed trees.
Oh, and the instructor said oak isn't good for turning? Splits?

Re: Turning class
Any wood is good practice turning wood. I have turned a fair amount of Red Oak, and there is no problem with it at all. There are probably more turned furniture components out of Red Oak than any other wood.
What types of turnings do you want to start working on??

Re: Turning class
Right now I just want to practice, coves and rounds, bowls is something I'm interested in making. I've signed up for their bowl turning class next month.

Re: Turning class
You always can glue up some scrap 4/4 stock to make spindles as large as you want.
My first "bumpy stick" (first turning attempt) was with a Poplar 2" x 2" from Lowe's

Re: Turning class
I was wondering how a glue up would turn, the glued edges don't catch the chisels?

Re: Turning class
The glue is a little harder on the tool edge than wood, but not any more difficult to turn. Take a look at segmented bowls...there's a lot of glue in there.

Re: Turning class
You want dry wood for turning bowls - otherwise they probably will warp and/or split..

Re: Turning class
Sometimes I think the segmented bowls, I am learning to do is more glue then wood
