Re: Turnin' Trainin' I'm blaming it all on this site!

Klingspor has classes, I took both their basic and bowl turning classes and enjoyed them very much.

NCSU's Craft Center offers classes as well.

I took my first class there and it was well worth it. Also when you are taking a turning class, the entire woodworking shop is open to you to use at any time.

Re: Turnin' Trainin' I'm blaming it all on this site!

Thanks for all of the kind replies. Greg is responsible for the first bowl. I think I am going to like turning. It is a peaceful quiet project to undertake. The lathe is very quiet. I listened to the hum of the lathe and the quiet sound of the scraping tools rounding the wood into a bowl shape. That does not replace the awesome sound of the table saw, planer, jointer, or any other beautiful sounding machinery that is the sound of flat boarders. Flat wood projects are still my favorite. And that is not likely to change with time!!!!!!!!

You fell hard, didn't you? Actually you are off to a great start. Let me encourage you guys to get your wives involved. it will make purchasing that next gouge/blank/lathe so much easier. Besides, you can divi-up your lathe time. Oh, and when the wood is really green - you get really wet -it's a blast! Welcome to the dark side!

Re: Turnin' Trainin' I'm blaming it all on this site!

the vortex has you in its swirl...... there is no escape from the abyss of the dark side you are drawn ever closer, closer until you realize there is no world other than the dark side you are its captive, it owns you
and you finally sense you don't want to go back you now want to bring others in....
Great work and fantastic choices on the blanks. When I first started to be sucked in I opted for the 4x4's and other pieces that I could find free gratis and almost got disgusted because no matter how much I tried I couldn't make them come out worth a hoot DUH! can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear.
Find some decent pieces and do your best. If they come out they are great if they don't, they were practice! Only you will ever know the truth
Henry, bring her in! I bought LOML her own lathe, and we have had more fun together down in the shop than I could begin to tell. She has more desire to learn and that has 'forced' me to brush up on my own skills and that has sparked a lot of interest in my own work. I don't regret it, not for a minute! Worst you can do is find a new justification to buy new tools! You might have to share them but look who you get to share them with!
I don't know if its this site or what but she has interests apart from the dark side.... I have to get that swirl going!

Re: Turnin' Trainin' I'm blaming it all on this site!

Here is a slightly different twist on finishing. I work in a body shop and this bowl found it's way into the paint booth for three heavy coats of PPG clear. I still have to do some sanding and a last coat but I thought that it really brought out the wood.
