Smile Turnin' Trainin' "updated photos"

I have viewed many threads on this forum. And while viewing them I have been drawn to the dark side by some of the threads and the awesome photos that the darksiders post here. I bought the HF lathe on sale and thanks to Greg, "woodman2k" today I learned to turn a bowl. Thanks Greg!! Also thanks to "taandctran" for the ambrosia maple blanks. This is some beautifully figured wood. The first bowl on the left is the training bowl turned at Greg's, the second is the one I played with after I got back home. The one on the right is two chunks of cherry laminated together and turned into a shallow bowl. I think I am hooked. Now I just have to learn to keep the flat and round well seperated, as it all has it's place in the world of woodworking! Thanks for all of you that are responsible for leading yet another one down the slippery slope to the dark side.

May the forces of darkness be with you.

Tracy, wonderful job on those bowls. I tell you it does not take long to get hooked.

Nice work, Tracey!!!

I would say that you are "well into it", already!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bowls really looks nice! Gotta love that ambrosia maple !!!

Did you have any trouble keeping the tools sharp during the turning?

Careful now! Don't abandon the flat/square side!!!!

Wayne

Actually the wood was pleasantly wet. Had it been dry, I am not sure how well it would have turned. It was some hard stuff. I turned some dry cherry after the maple and it was actually a little softer.

The wife had the bowl gouge in her hand firmly planted in the center bowl, only for a minute though, that did not last long. At least I got her to try it.

This is the thread started by the person who has the maple. He is close to me so if I can help let me know.

Tracy, you make good results look so easy. You are channeling the siren song from the dark side.

Glad you like the maple Tracy. When I saw it I knew I had to get it before they turned it into fire wood. That stuff is beautiful.

Now that we have you in our grasp, more is about to come.

Next we start taking money from your wallet for more, newer, and more advanced turning tools....

Beware the slippery slope!

Re: Turnin' Trainin' I'm blaming it all on this site!

Good work!
If those are your first results, then I am going to run away and hide! I'm certainly not going to show picture of the 'results'

My first slide towards the dark side were with a squared piece of a 2x4 and another scrap piece of dry cedar. If there were mistakes to make, I made them (without significant danger). I'm nowhere near actually turning a bowl.

My wife said she'd join me in a class if I could find one! Now I have to decide if I can find one and get her started (and me), or if I want to keep my sanctuary/shop all to myself.

Henry
