Raised stand for lathe and lighting

Today I decided to finally build a stand to increase the working height of my lathe. I used some salvaged plywood and 2x4's along with a pack of adjustable feet from Hartville Tool (they are nice ).

Since I never throw anything away, I took our old track lighting that was removed 2 years ago and wired a plug (also salvaged from a light that no longer worked) to create some spot lighting over the lathe. I don't use this garage door, so I find a nice spot to suspend the track inside of the rail.

Re: Raised stand for lathe and lighting

Very nice Mike Do you find that the base gets in the way when approaching the lathe close??? All you need now is a tie-dyed sheet behind that lathe station and you'll be really cool I really like the lighting. I put a magnetic base light on my lathe and now I can my screw-ups as they happen, and it really helps to show when you've got the bottom of a bowl too thin and are about to introduce the ID to the OD

You have elevated the art of turning and set the mood with a-track-tive lighting!

Nice looking lathe stand, Mike. I also like the fact that you recycled something most folks would throw away. I never throw anything away either. LOML calls me "Fred Sanford"

Re: Raised stand for lathe and lighting

Dave, that was a concern the first time I thought about a base for it but after having the floor underneath the lathe for so long coupled with my pigeon-toed-ness, I am good to go! Maybe we can have a drum circle and make some new designs for lathe wall hangings.

Mike, very creative. I must need more caffeine.

Randy, I resemble that remark. My wife just hopes that I don't get as bad as my dad. We did grow up with 5 cars in the yard that didn't run...........AND WE LIKED IT.

Re: Raised stand for lathe and lighting

Great lathe stand Mike! I have the same lathe and find it much too low. I can work at it for about two hours and then I feel like Quasimoto for two days

I've been thinking of putting something like that together but just haven't taken the time to do it yet. Maybe your post will motivate me to do something about it now! Thanks!

Re: Raised stand for lathe and lighting

Mike,
The stand looks great, I'm sure that the extra height is great. How's the stability ?

Re: Raised stand for lathe and lighting

It's solid Jimmy. I boxed a frame with 2x4's then put plywood on top and bottom. The lathe legs already had holes, so I bolted it down. The heavy duty levelers from Hartville work great also. I had ordered a pack to try when they were on sale for $10.
