Well I went to Harbor Freight this weekend to get a set of the digital fractional calipers. Every time I walked by the bigger wood working tools I felt a strange force pulling me ever so much closer. I finally realized that I was there two days before the sale on their lathe was to end. I walked away several times only to venture back to the lathe. I asked the clerk working if they had one in stock, and of course they did not. That was good as it would have went home with me. Then I was at the checkout and the clerk asked me if I wanted to get a rain check on the lathe. So the moral to this story is that the dark side has an awesome power that will pull you in. This is the result of my trip to spend $20.00.

Of course I had to block out my address and all personal info.
I think I have been lured to the Dark side. They are going to call me when the next one comes in.

You can't pass up a deal like that, Tracy. Pay no attention to the naysayers.
Buy the lathe and don't look back. Oh yea, say goodbye to all your free time...

Re: The power of the dark side

Tracy,

Were you at the Raleigh HF ? Because I know for a fact that they sold the last one on Friday morning.

Well, keep on checking, it will soon be there again. I heard that the $199 lathe won't be in the future for much longer because of the rising cost of steel and transportation costs.

So eventually the Dark Side will get more expensive and price everybody out.

Good Luck,
Jimmy

Should I give in to the dark side. I mean if I build a table with round legs they will have to be turned; right? The force is so strong, it even sends coupons your way. Thanks Joe
Tracy, if you don't go get that lathe I'm gonna jump through this monitor and smack you up-side the head
If you don't want it buy it anyway and sell it to someone who does.
Just do it

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Told you I did, name, phone number, change you should. Burn rain check you should have, answer not email, strong is the dark side of the force. Grave danger are you now in. Only the spinny dark lord knows of our weakness. Always two there are, a master and an apprentice. Around the survivors a perimeter create.

Re: The power of the dark side

Ok, proof will have to wait until I get some help to set the lathe on the legs. Darn this is one heavy lathe. My son is off tomorrow and can help me lift it on to the legs. Total out of pocket spent for the 34-706 lathe and some trial "cheap" turning tools was $179.32. I think I did ok even if I fail miserably at turning. 179.32 for a 289.95 lathe ain't half bad. And I had to buy it or else DaveO would have smacked me up side the head after coming through this monitor,. Now I have met Dave and he ain't a small fellow, Don't want him smackin' on me. Proof will have to wait until tomorrow.

(Darth Vader voice on) I have you now! Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force. (Darth Vader voice off)

Dang right, you done good. That is a heck of deal. I got mine for $199 plus tax, I already had the $40 turning set to go with it. Before you set it up on the legs you might want to check if it will be at the right height for you. I had to add 4.5" wood blocks to raise the centers to the right height for me, but I "ain't a small fellow".
The centers should be around your elbow height. Your back will thank you for this.

That's a great lathe! That's what I started out with and then I sold it to my next door neighbor for $100 when I moved up to the 3520B (Mustard Monster). Enjoy the dark side. (And don't be afraid of the skew)

Re: The power of the dark side, It's Dark In Salisbury

I promised proof. It is getting dark in Salisbury, Here are a couple of photos proving the purchase. The second photo is just some playing with a piece of cedar. I got a heck of a deal, now I gotta totally re-arrange my little shop.

The dark side has taken hold. Who would like to give me some tips or a demo on turning?
