Other than a lathe, chisels, sharpening equipment and pen kits what are the basic things needed to start turning/making pens?

Here's the pic of how I drill my blanks. All you need to do is hold it straight and square!

Thanks Wildwood. Very informative site. Nice to know there is a wood turner near by. Maybe I can look over your shoulder one day for some tips.

I also keep an illustration I printed out off the internet in my shop so I can keep the European Bushings in the right order. It is good for me to have the visual reminder.

Re: Pen Turning Equipment

Down The Dark Side You Go!!

When I started I got a slimline pen set, I made 1 test pen and then went for it! My 12 yr old son wanted to try and he made about 5 test pens be for making his first. I went online and got 10 slimline pen sets. NOTE: DO NOT DO IT!!!! Try out other pen sets first.
I went to http://www.arizonasilhouette.com/ and bought "Basic Pen Turning with Bill Baumbeck". It helped on the turning and sanding. You can goto http://woodturningonline.smartflix.c...ory/28/Turning and rent DVD (May be the way to go!).

Re: Pen Turning Equipment

Micro mesh is a set of 9"grits" of abrasive.
I buy it in 6x12 inch sheets.(around $35.00-40.00 for 9 6x12 sheets, one of each grit)
It lasts forever and can be washed.
The "grits" start at the conventional 400 grit sand paper grits but eventually go off the standard charts.
I use Klingspor gold up to 400 and then start with MM to change the "scratch pattern"
After you go up to #9 MM the next less abrasive material would be a brown paper bag.
I have screwed up more pens with a buffing wheel than I care to recall. No need to buff after MM.

Re: Pen Turning Equipment

Splinter, might want to contact these folks for help. Don't know anyone there, perhaps they know a pen turner or two in your area.

You may want to make one of these

The only item I have found extremely useful, which was easy to make on the bandsaw, was one of these

I made one of those but I didn't cut the slots to suit me so I made this today and I think I will like it better. At least my tests seems to be good but I will not know for sure until I try my first pen with a blank drill on it.

I also modified a tablesaw sled I had for an old table top tablesaw to cut the pen blanks to length without getting my fingers near a spinning blade.
