Cates sawmill in hillsborough does a huge buisness milling railroad ties.
Gum can be treated and holds up well, so they say.
Anyhoo, he gets tons of free cut offs. Many local turners pick through the cutoff pile.
The wood ends up rather bland, but makes for some interesting effects.
You appear to have, as mentioned, pith. I do recall my dad having some good and some useless gum blanks. Seemed to be a hit or miss wood.

How you spinners dry those big blanks I don't know so sorry I can't be much help.

But the intresting part was I rough turned it about 7pm and this is what it looked like the next morning at 8am. Guess I should of taken the time to seal the endgrain but was out of anchor seal.
