Looks like there is a lot of pith in that blank and it will crack every time DAMHIKT

Re: Oh' The Horror

You should try again and soak it in alcohol this time, let it drip dry a few minutes and wrap the outside with brown grocery paper. In a few weeks it will be ready to finish turn.

Re: Oh' The Horror

FWIW, my dad turns a lot of sweet gum bowls.

Cates sawmill in hillsborough does a huge buisness milling railroad ties.

Gum can be treated and holds up well, so they say.

Anyhoo, he gets tons of free cut offs. Many local turners pick through the cutoff pile.

The wood ends up rather bland, but makes for some interesting effects.

You appear to have, as mentioned, pith. I do recall my dad having some good and some useless gum blanks. Seemed to be a hit or miss wood.

Yep avoid pith - That looks like a branch more than a tree trunk and also is evidence of no end grain sealer and drying WAY to FAST. How you spinners dry those big blanks I don't know so sorry I can't be much help.

Thanks

Re: Oh' The Horror

Yup, a little pith there, I was trying to get as much of the heartwood as I could, so I knew that might of been trouble. But the intresting part was I rough turned it about 7pm and this is what it looked like the next morning at 8am. Guess I should of taken the time to seal the endgrain but was out of anchor seal.
