I have been drooling over everyone's gorgeous burl pens on the site, so I stopped by NCWood Friday and picked up some new blanks. Here is a simple slimline I made today.

Thanks for looking!

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

I am sure that they look great, but the pics are a little to small to tell for sure. I can't see your text to try to figure out what you did, and why the thumbs won't enlarge.
Just post the full size pics

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

There you go . That is some nice looking burl, a lot of eyes and swirling grain. Very interesting coloration too. You don't know what it is, do you?
Great job!

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

I have no clue and Gary couldn't tell me either.

I've got another blank that has even more eyes than this one (reminds me of Starry Night by Van Gogh). I'm saving that one for a Baron when the kits arrives this week!

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

Good call, good wood looks better on a bigger kit. You'll love the Baron once you've made one. It's easy and a classy looking pen too.

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

I agree with DaveO that the recent update to the Photo Gallery software removed some of the easier links to use when posting thumbnails that you want to use in a post. The one that is there give the link to the thumbnail only. I corrected your original post so that clicking on the thumbnails now links to the full sized photo. I opened the Photo Gallery with the pictures from your Gallery in a second window. As before, get the URL of the thumbnail by right-clicking on it and selecting properties. In the new window with those properties, drag/select the address (URL) and again right-click on it and select Copy. I the message window, use the Insert Picture icon to put the thumbnail into your message. Now return to the full size picture in the gallery and right-click on the full sized picture and again select Properties. Highlight the address again and right-click for the Copy command to put the address in the Paste buffer. Return to the message window and single click on the thumbnail to select it. Now, click on the Insert Hyperlink icon (Globe with chain link) and paste the buffer into the Address with CTRL-V (or right-click/Paste). This now associates the full sized picture with the thumbnail.

Hope this helps.

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

Actually Rob, if you just copy the Linked Thumbnail URL provide beneath the picture and paste it into the text of your post your get the same effect. I think that is a very nice change with the software upgrade.

Yea, I just figured that out myself

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

The buckeye burls always remind me of 'The Scream'. I wonder if that isn't some sapwood from buckeye!?!?

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

Thank you Rob, I'll try that on my next post.

Dave, I thought that is what I did in my original posting, but the thumbnails did not link to the larger photo as anticipated. I believe that address just gives you the thumbnail pic. I'm not positive about that though. I'll follow the experts on this.

So Mike, this is the begging of your evil mastermind plan for combining metal and wood!

Looks great!

I can't even see the weld beads :-p

Re: My most recent pen w/ burl blank

NIce looking pen amd burl.
When I first started turning pens my first 20 were American classics from WC.
(I didn't know any better)
When I got my first slimlines I thought, is that all there is to it?
You don't need a BAron to show off beautiful wood.
Lose the center bushing and modify the pen.
The only thing you need to soncern yourself with is the taper from the center to the finial and clip.
Some clips allow for a larger barrel than others.
The Euro style pen is nothing more than a slimline with a hat and a belt but they chrage you three times as much.
DaveO can give you some pointers on custom CB's he makes the best I have seen bar none.(me included)
