Re: my first pen

YEAH I HAD TO DO RECUE ONE OF THE TUBES ON THAT FIRST PEN. THATS WHY THE GRAIN DOESNT MATCH.NOT THAT YOU CAN TELL FROM THE PICS OR HARDLY IN PERSON BEING PURPLE HEART. BUT IKNOW IT WRONG . I WISH I COULD GET THE HANG OF THAT SCREW EVERYTIME I TOUCH IT I RUIN A PROJECT.THANK GOODNESS FOR FREE WOOD.

I DID GET A CPL MORE PENS TURNED TODAY. TRIED THE CA FINISH. WORKS GREAT. I DIDNT HAVE ANY BLO BUT PASTE WAX WORKED GREAT. JUST GOTTA MAKE SURE YOU USE THOSE MM IN GOOD LIGHT(WHICH I DONT HAVE) SO YOU CAN SEE THE SCRATCH PATTERN. OR YOU GET DULL AND SHINY SPOTS WHERE YOU DIDNT SAND GOOD BETWEEN COATS.

HERE ARE SOME PICS.

TRIED DIFFERENT SHAPES THE ONE ON THE LEFT WAS FOR ME BUT I DONT LIKE IT.IT FEELS STRANGE IN MY HAND. BUT OTHERS HAVE SAID THEY LIKED IT SO ILL BE GIFTING IT TO ONE OF THEM. THE ONE ON THE RIGHT IS AS CLOSE TO FLAT AS I CAN GET. I LIKE IT BUT WISH I HAD PUT SOME ACCENT IN IT. THE LOML HAS CLAIMED THE PROTOTYPE (SRCATCHES AND ALL) AS HER FOREVER PEN. GREAT NOW EVERY GETS TO SEE HOW CRAPPY I DID . BUT I HAVE A HOLLY(PURE WHITE) WITH PURPLE HEART KNOTS IN THE WORKS TO BRIBE IT BACK FROM HER.

HERE IS ANOTHER BAD ANGLE.MAN I NEED TO REPLACE MY CAM.

Re: my first pen

Walt , man you turning those out bro - I bet that big one does feel funny in the hand What kind of lighting do you have when you take the picture with your phone - These two where taken with my phone with a light over head and two to the side - they could be better but hey it is all I have for now - Try some different angles with your lighting and see how that works for you

Re: my first pen

Hey Walt
Nice to see a local person doing pens!
They are highly addictive.
Your first was a good start. Keep it. Period. Regardless. Mine helps me more than I can say.
CA is a good finish but there are others. I use friction polish, ca, and others depending on the wood, the pen kit, preferences etc. Some people think ca makes the wood "plasticy" and I can't say it doesn't. Still it can look awesome.
Do you use calipers? I didn't and looking at an older pen I can sure tell it.
Like any wood working, finishing makes or breaks a piece. And sanding makes or breaks the finish.
BTW which woodturning club do you go to?

Re: my first pen

not sure what the name of the group is i was just invited the other day by a member here after i started i oest about turning corian. they meet in cashiers the second thursday of the month. and ive been told they have everything you need to sharpen your tools there.which i need badly.ill ask but im sure youd be welcome as well.

no i didnt use calipers for these just my eyes. dont want to get perfect i like the slight irregularities in turning myself. sometimes i see pieces that have been over perfected and have lost all the charm of hand made woodworking. if i want perfect ill get a robot to mass produce it for me lol. but i like the freedom of form that turning offers. its a nice break from the tight tolerance flat work that i usually do. its like taking a break without ever leaving the shop. which is why most of my turings happen randomly. when i find myself getting riled up over whatever it is im working on not doing what i want it to do i go to the lathe and clear my head. usually come back and everything falls into place.
