There was a challenge on one of the other turning sites so I turned this for it. I've made some like this in the past. This one is turned from a piece of apple. It is 5" inches tall. It makes for a shallow box but puts a different twist on a mushroom.
Thanks,
Jack

Re: Mushroom box?

Great design. I would love to make one. Can you give some detail on how you made the lid?

Re: Mushroom box?

Thanks everyone. It is one of the projects I've had a few of my High School students make last year. Scott, I will try and discribe how I make the top. I leave a tenon on the top end of the lid part of the box. After parting the top blank off I turn the bottom of the mushroom making sure that the top lip of the box is around 1/2" smaller than the lid blank. I turn and sand the bottom. I then mount the lid in the chuck using the tenon I left at the top end of the blank. I then hollow it out leaving it smaller than the top lip of the bottom. I then use a square end scrapper to turn the inside lip of the lid to fit the bottom snug, but not to tight. I turn the lid fit so that the bottom goes up into the lid a 1/4" or so. After I sand the bottom lip of the lid I take the tenon out of the chuck and mount the lid in the chuck expanding the chuck into the bottom of the lid in the recess where the the bottom of the mushroom fits. I then turn the top of the lid to what I want and sand it. This one is thick on the lid since I didn't have one to look at as I hollowed the lid out. If I have one to look at, I can guess a lot better to how much I can hollow the lid and not make a funnel out of it when I turn the outside down. It is a neat project and one I've never seen anyone else do.
Thanks Again,
Jack
Here's a picture of the bottom. It will show how the bottom goes up into the lid of the mushroom.

Re: Mushroom box?

Great box!

You could sell those at Infinities End or Sun Shine Daydreams. I can see the sell now, "Dude it's like a cool wooden mushroom but look you can hide your weed in it."
