Hello all, I am in the process of trying to hollow out a box, inside diameter about 2" and 3 1/2" deep. What tools do you use and what procedures? I have tried 6 different gouges plus a tool using the CI0 cutter. They are all scary. The wood is semi-dry cherry. Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: How do you hollow a box?

I would use a round nosed scraper and if you need/want a squared up bottom, switch to a square nosed scraper toward the end. This method is a lot less "scary" and less chance of flying wood.

I like the Oland tool, it is pretty easy to make your own tool and customize it to your preference.

Re: How do you hollow a box?

I have used a spindle gouge on the last few I have done based on notes at Alan Leland's web site. I do majority with the spindle gouge and then do final shaping with a scraper. I admit the gouge was scary to start with but works well since I have gotten a little more practice. Make sure your tools are sharp. It was amazing how well my last box worked out after a major sharpening session!!

That size ID---------I would use a forstner bit in a heart beat. Horizontal boring on the lathe. Then clean up the bottom with a scraper.

Re: How do you hollow a box?

I start with a forstner bit ( I know... that's cheating). Then, I switch to my Oneway Termite tool. I finish with a box scraper for a nice flat bottom and smooth sides.

Re: How do you hollow a box?

Many thanks to all of you responding with your ideas and suggestions to my dilemma with the box.

Robert: A round nose scrapper is one that I do not have but expect to have tomorrow.

The Ci0 cutter I think would have worked if the ID had been a little larger. I put my cutter on a ½ x ½ square shaft and there was not enough side clearance and I did not want to change it.

Mike: I have an Oland tool that looks just like your picture, although I have not gotten around to making a handle for it yet, still using the ¾” shaft for a handle. The problem I had with it was the lack of side clearance, the box is straight walled. I have not gotten around to making a side cutter one yet.

Gary: After trying most every tool I own, I ended up using a 5/8” fingernail ground gouge.

Jerry: That is what I ended up doing, but not having a scraper, I finished with the fingernail gouge.

Bob: No termites in my shop, and unfortunately, no scraper. I should have a scraper form Doug tomorrow.

Earl: Due to the small ID and depth, 3 ½”, my Oland tool did not work for me, I tried.

Ken: I have a Ci1 and Ci0 that I made and use them a lot, however as stated previously, there was not enough side clearance with them with the ½” square shaft that I used. I thought about milling the bottom and edges somewhat but they work so well for other projects that I am hesitant in changing them.

Due to my inexperience, I believe the relatively small ID in combination with the depth, is what caused me the difficulty. Any way it is done, I learned a lot and hopefully, the next one will be better.

Thanks again to everyone for sharing your thoughts.
