a while back I posted the following thread about a phenolic resin slab that a friend gave me:

http://ncwoodworker.net/forums/f81/p...sin-top-23809/

Anyway, I have been looking for a creative way to add mass to my Jet 1642EVS without resorting to sand or concrete bags. Well, I've had this phenolic resin top that weights about 200 lbs and I decided to cut it into slabs the width of my lathe base. Long story short, I got a cheap diamond masonry blade for my circ saw and clamped a straight edge to the resin. Cutting was slow and very dusty, but the end result is ~200 lbs more mass on my lathe and I can still use it as a storage shelf! Pics to follow once I get my shop back in about 2 weeks!

So if any of you turners ever see any of this stuff for sale cheap, it makes a great and HEAVY shelf for your lathe.

Re: Great Lathe "ballast"

I guess it must be clear see-thru phenolic resin, so won't show up in a pic?

I know, I know no pic didn't happen... But I would rather get ribbed for no pic than to post a pic of the current state of my shop! (Just ask Jeremy, he's seen it lately)
