First, let me thank PChristy for putting together the bottle stopper purchase and for letting me buy-in a bit late. Not only am I sold on Ruth's stoppers, I actually enjoy the idea of this "little" lathe project.

Now, before you look at these understand (1) I'm a rookie turner and (2) a virgin bottle stopper turner! There is a progression in quality, the first one being the blue/yellow one (which is a bit rough) and the final being the ones with the DECENT chatter marks on the endgrain.

This was the very first. I was playing around with dye and the chatter tool a bit. It ain't too pretty, but it worked.

Re: First Bottle Stoppers

Did you make your own chatter tool or did you buy one? Good looking stoppers. I got in on that order also but haven't made any yet.

If you decide to do another group purchase, I'm in. I had bought some in a "starter kit" from WC, but they just look silly next to Ruth's. They are VERY nice and hefty!

Re: First Bottle Stoppers

Here is another one from this evening. This one was a practice run with the new spiraling tool that I picked up at the Klingspor Extravaganza. It's pretty cool if you ask me!

Re: First Bottle Stoppers

Nice stoppers there Jeremy. Especially if these are your first ones.

I got to meet and talk to Ruth at the Greensboro Turning Symposium. Nice lady. I think I was her first customer Friday morning even before she got totally set up. I am looking forward to trying her stoppers. I have tried the other long metal type stoppers and was glad when I got all of them sold. I think Ruth's stopper kits are much nicer looking.

She told me she got the idea for the stopper from the long ones. She took one into her son's metal working shop and began turning it down until she got her design like she wanted it and then found a machine shop to make them from her prototype.

Jeremy, I personally want be able to do another one until March or so but if we can get enough others wanting to get in a group buy we can go ahead and do one - I can get it all setup and get it going if there is enough interest - if not we can wait until sometime around March/April

Don't know that I'd say that, but I'm "learning via catch" Turning is a good change of pace ... the projects (that I'm doing) are usually fairly simple, and there's little to no measuring involved . It takes a little artistic touch ... which I'm finding gets lost in lack of skill, or changed when I take the skew for a ride down my near-finished piece. Overall though, the lathe is good fun and works another part of my brain
