I just finished another bowl from the large oak burl. This one is a gift for the person who gave the oak burl to me. The Oak burl bowl is 12" in dia. by 5 1/2" deep. It is finished with deft to help fill a few voids around the eye burl and show off the grain.
The second bowl is a maple vase. The curl is hard to believe in this bowl. It is 12" tall by 7" in dia. I'm going to put a few more coats of deft on it to bring out the shine a little more.
Thanks
Jack

Jack
Truly awesome! You've done mother nature proud with your work from that burl.
Hate I missed the demonstration of the coring system. Dang old work!
You might wind up with more burls giving things like that as thanks

Re: A few bowls finished.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Mother nature does most of the work. I just try and bring it out to be seen. I still have one more bowl out of the oak burl to return. After that I will have a few game calls and wine stoppers when the slabs dry, I cut from the oak burl.
Thanks again,
Jack

Thanks again,

Jack is it hard to get a thread started in the burl to turn the stoppers - I don't know what has happened but the last few stoppers that I have bored out(not burls) (using the same bit as always) have stripped out

Re: A few bowls finished.

Phillip,
The Dymond wood is very dense and will not thread with just a bolt. Ruths mandrel has a cut out section in the bolt that makes it act like a tape for cutting threads in your stopper. If you don't have one of her mandrels you can use a tape made for metal the size you need and it will cut the threads in wood easily.
Hope this helps,
Jack

I am ordering one of her mandrels and I hope to turn some burls for some stoppers - I don't have any burls big enough for bowls - Right now I am not into bowls anyway - My neighbor does have a Red Bud Tree burl I have had my eyes on thoe - it is about 12-13" in diameter and about 14' high

Re: A few bowls finished.

Wow,

I am so impressed, and feel that I am way behind. The finish is excellent and I love the look of this one

Maybe some day I can get a lesson from you or any other that does such great finishes.
