I roughed the Curly Sycamore blank I got from Jeff today It was about 10 1/2 x 6 when I started. I had the LOML shot some short videos of the flying noodles and a lot of photos in my new photo studio set up I got for Xmas.

Cooool Nick!
Didn't realize how big a hunk of wood it was until I saw the video. That's a little scary.

Wow - I have lathe envy! That piece of wood probably weighs more than my lathe does! Turning wet wood is fun. Thanks for the video.

Re: Curly Sycamore HF (flying noodles)

Very cool Nick, I like the video. There is no question as to why to wear a face shield

I would love a little more detail about how you got to the point you are now. What did you hollow with, spigot or recess chucking, how long did you turn between centers, at what point did you start hollowing????? All the assorted details, please.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Curly Sycamore HF (flying noodles)

What great fun! When the tool is cutting right it is like a hot knife through butter. On a side note the lathe looks like it is on to tall of a stand?

Re: Curly Sycamore HF (flying noodles)

I used a 3" face plate mounted on the top of the blank to turn the rough shape and spigot. I then chucked it up a reversed it and kept it between centers. I refined the from a little more. Next I bored a 2 1/2 hole in center then started hollowing. The walls are about 3/4" thick and the bottom is about 1". It is now soaking in DNA I will wrap it in the AM and let it sit about 3 weeks and finish

Tom
It is on a bench. I have all ways had it up high as was the one I learned on. I find I do not get any back pain that way. I may be unconventional but it works for me

Re: Curly Sycamore HF (flying noodles)

Ok I think I finally met someone who likes wood as much as I do. She's got curl and long ones at that, you not only got curl, you got some spalting to. Man that's gonna make an awsome vase when it' all said and done.

Don't know if I ever showed you the tree while it was standing but here it is, one ulgy butt of a tree. It looked like one of those horor flick trees that walk around. Here it is standing and mill mokeys working (playing with it) on the mill.

I'm glad you got your lathe secured down tight, love the vids - way cool

I'm so glad that bowl blank has tons of curl, man it's going to be awesome once done.

Re: Curly Sycamore HF (flying noodles)

Looks like you had fun, Nick. Slinging noodles is about as fun as it gets. I hope it dries out nicely for you. No need for that wood to get ornery....

Re: Curly Sycamore HF (flying noodles)

Jeff
When I started it was about 22/24% MC. I checked it today after spending the night in DNA and this morning drip drying it was at 18/20% MC. I will be checking MC 1 a week until 8/10% and then finish turning
