Would love to hear some feedback on turning tools . i think it is time to start looking for a set to purchase I don't need a Cadillac but don't want a Volkswagen either
Maybe someone has some for sale, seen a good special etc etc

Don't want to start a war ....just some good ol fashioned North Carolina Woodworker'er hands-on practical knowledge good and bad

TIA for any and all input

Re: affordable tools

Robert,

I probably have a couple extra tools around and i run up on more all the time. So, if you make it back over this way I have a couple you can have.

And we can make an Oland tool for you to try. They can be used for almost anything if you keep a few different bits ground to different shapes.

Re: affordable tools

I have to agree with everyone about the HF tools. If you have only a few $ to spend, then they are a great starter set. I think mine were on sale for $9 at the time. Some will argue that there isn't anything you cannot turn with them and I won't disagree. But I don't have the time it takes to fuss with sharpening them evey two minutes either.

My suggestion would be to get the most basic set of quality chisels you can get at the time.. something a skew, rouging gouge, finger gouge and a parting tool. One should be able to master the use of these before spending money on the big bowl fluted gouges, curved scrapers, chatter tools and all those things that cost so much. Buy anything beyond the basic 4-5 tools as you need them and only individually to get the best quality. And don't be afraid to try antique ones - lots of good use and quality.

Good luck,

David
