| Re: affordable tools I have to agree with everyone about the HF tools. If you have only a few $ to spend, then they are a great starter set. I think mine were on sale for $9 at the time. Some will argue that there isn't anything you cannot turn with them and I won't disagree. But I don't have the time it takes to fuss with sharpening them evey two minutes either.
My suggestion would be to get the most basic set of quality chisels you can get at the time.. something a skew, rouging gouge, finger gouge and a parting tool. One should be able to master the use of these before spending money on the big bowl fluted gouges, curved scrapers, chatter tools and all those things that cost so much. Buy anything beyond the basic 4-5 tools as you need them and only individually to get the best quality. And don't be afraid to try antique ones - lots of good use and quality.
