wynn Filters and clogging?

I have a Wynn Filter for my DC but I dont use it because it clogs so fast. Are there any fixes for this problem? I use the bag now it does fine for me because I have my DC in a sealed closet so the fine dust doesnt get back out to me and in my lungs. I was always under the impression that the Wynn would give better suction but it doesnt.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: wynn Filters and clogging?

Jon,
What dust collector are you using? The cartridge filters have a lot more surface area and allow much more volume through. More volume carries more dust.
Check out these posting about a pre-separator:

They may offer you better dust collection if you're using a single stage collector.

Re: wynn Filters and clogging?

Mark I have the Delta 50-760. I thought about that but then I would have to rework all my pipes. I was hoping to not have to do that, Also the seperators cut down on CFM I thought?

Re: wynn Filters and clogging?

Jon, Your goal is to remove the majority of the solids (chips and sawdust) before the exhaust for the DC hits the filters -- they are designed to clear the exhaust air of the finest particulates. Despite the modest loss of CFM through the separator, your system will be much more efficient if you add one of them to your DC. A single stage DC like the Delta you have is just not efficient enough to keep 20% of the solids going on to your filter and clogging it. That's why I'm upgrading to a Pentz designed cyclone.

If you research the home-made version Bas and Don were working on I think you'll find they don't impact the total flow that much. The small amount that they do is compensated for by having a stable flowrate for significantly longer d/t >90% of the fine dust being captured in the trashcan. I've seen a 4" hose version of the same thing that worked so you may not need to re-do your plumbing.
Phil Thein has a great site here with a discussion/blog thing:

You may have reached a point where you need to consider a cyclone. I've had my Oneida connected to a large filter array and had to clean it once in 1.5 years of steady use. The only reason then was that I allowed my collection can to over fill and I got dust above the bottom of the cyclone which made a big mess in the filter. Otherwise I would have probably not needed to do it even now.
