#1 | | Where to find 4-wire extension cord ? Name: Mark City: Fuquay Varina State: NC County: Wake Join Date: Nov 2005 06-06-2008, 10:03 AM
OK, I got my VFD (phase convertor) in the mail, but ran into another problem.
I need to wire-up an extension cord from the VFD to the motor and I need 4 wire cord (three hots plus ground) in 14 or 16 gauge.
Does anyone know of a local spot (Triangle) to buy 4 wire, 14-16 ga. cords ? They use 4-wire cord with generator cordsets....
All they have at my local HD (which is a small HD) is 10 gauge - cable is way too thick to fit into the housing/terminals.
BTW, I did some jackleg wiring last night and got the VFD and the fan fired up. Woo hoo.

I am pretty sure I have a roll of 12-3 with ground SOOW/SOJ (rubber jacket) cable. If you can use that let me know how many ft you need.
Cheers,

Glenn - Ideally I could use 15' (or three lengths of 5' if you have scraps), but I could get by with less too.
If you have the material, let me know how much $$ you want.
I'm making up a whip with spade connectors for each of two fans, plus a third for the VFD itself. This way I can easily move the VFD between the fans.
I hope using spade connectors is a good alternative to plug ends. All I'm finding are NEMA locking plugs($$).

1) Spade connectors are __VERY__ dangerous! I nearly vaporized an outlet on 110v 15A circuit trying to plug in a device I had built using separate spade connectors!
2) NEMA locking plugs are well worth the money for the safety factor that they give you.
3) Check with any local electrical supply house. Not a borg store but a small store on a back street that is only open from say 7:00 to 4:30 M-F, and specifically targets the professional electrical trades, not the home owner. they will have all the suppies you need.

Mark,
I bought all my 3 phase Nema locking plugs on fleabay: I got real deals! I only buy NIB and brand name. Last batch I bought I ended up paying $8 each for for 5 Leviton 3-ph 230V, 30A. They are not listed at all times, but with some patience, you still can things like that at a decent price.
Cheers,
Bernhard |

In the meantime, I have got the setup running using a $1.97 worth of cut-up 16/2 extension cord.
