I've been watching another thread on ZI dust collection. Good info. NOW, what's anyone doing to collect the "stream" off a sliding miter saw? I love my Bosch, but that sucker does throw some dust to the rear. If anyone has mastered the sliding/compound part, I'd sure like to see some pics. Right now I have a "portable dust hood" and clamp assembly that I have jury rigged, but it's not really a solution.

I believe that to be one of the most difficult machines to collect dust from.
I will be very interested in reading/seeing some of the solutions that others have.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

That little bag deal is totally worthless and just gets in the way. I'm gonna keep monkeying (no offense Fred) with it and if anything decent evolves, I'll let you know.

I love that machine but I dread cleaning up after I use it. Please find a way to get the shavings and dust under control and share it with me! |

Why not build a box at the rear of the saw, with a floor that slopes down to a dust pipe outlet? For a Compound Miter Saw, and a Sliding Compund Miter Saw the box could be connected to the saw carriage so that it "travels" with the saw (left to right). This way box wouldn't have to be so big. Outlet could be hooked to flex pipe. The box may need to be lined with a scrap piece of carpet to prevent sawdust from bouncing back towards the saw. Main thing is to have outlet on the bottom, as that's where the saw dust ends up anyway. On Norm's miter saw station, he has a LARGE HVAC transition underneath the saw itself, in addition to hose to blade guard. |

I am working on making it where it would almost be like a donw draft table but just at the back half of the table. In theory it would work good.

I was out in the shop this afternoon (just lookin') and studying this deal. I have a large plastic dust hood that I bought from Rockler that I use for the belt sander etc. I'm thinkin' "How could I attach that thing to the back of the slider arm so it can move front to back and side to side?" I'm gonna continue to "cogitate" on that and if I come up with anything that I'm not ashamed of, I'll share it. I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same. I've seen pics of that shop of yours, so I know "Doug ain't gonna have no junk!" (Unlike me!)

The 90 street elbow in the guard outlet directs dust down from that source as well. It really works well.

It doesn't get 100%, especially when cutting angles, but it does a decent job. The vents above it are where air is returned to the shop from my paint bay, (exhaust the cyclone outside), which in turn draws air through the exhaust fans. Though unintended, this actually seems to help with the finer dust with sort of a "draft" effect. Here is a pic right after I got it in place. Good enough for who it's for I reckon. Least I don't have to sweep around it. Occasionally I'll open the blast gate and blow off around it with the air compressor just to clean up. Perfect? No, but it works as good or better than anything else I've seen. |
