I am setting up 1/2 of my large 2 car garage as a wood shop and the wife is on my *** about the dust getting on her stuff on the other side of the garage. Here are my requirements :

1. Must be a mobile unit
2. Maintain good suction and have long term reliablity
3. budget is $500

Can this be done ?

Dan, did you go with the paper filter or the fiber filter?
Al, actually neither at this point. Since I already had the Delta 50-720 DC I just used it on the outlet of the separator drum. This gives me the pre-separation of the Thien baffle in the drum and the 1 micron bag on the Delta.

I think it is "closer" to 2HP than the older model and has a little bigger impeller. IMO if you buy it at the sale price of ~ $140 you are paying for the motor with is the part that is worth something. The rest of the machine is really just a few bucks worth of sheet metal and some plastic bags.
All in all though IMO it's worth the $140 and can be a decent DC if tweaked a bit.

If I were going to use the HF DC "as designed" I would go with the fiber filter. Even though it's .5 micron larger than the paper filter it's rated better at handling fibers but the big thing to me is it's washable. So when you need to really clean it you can wash it, dry it out and your almost like new again.

BTW I've added a few pics to show what I've done with the two DC's. The drum is about 1/2 full and you can see there is barely anything in the bag at this point. I was going to just run the outlet of the drum outside but figured I had the other DC so I might as well use it.

Also, not trying to hijack the thread with the pics etc.

I also highly recommend the Delta 50-760. I picked it up from Amazon when it's price had droped to $289, with free shipping.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

That HF is way more machine than I need, but it is awful hard to resist at the curent price. But it's not happening for me right now; no way can I make space for it. If you don't find the other coupon, it is on sale for $179 right now and 20% coupons are easy to come by (I have 2 and would share 1) which gets it under $150.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

If the BOSS is concerned with dust in the house a dust collector is not enough. I have a Jet 1100 (bags but not a filter) and it is a decent chip collector but fine dust still covered every thing in the shop until I bought a Jet Air Filter. Even with this I think a shop conected to the house will have a dust problem.
