I am setting up 1/2 of my large 2 car garage as a wood shop and the wife is on my *** about the dust getting on her stuff on the other side of the garage. Here are my requirements :

1. Must be a mobile unit
2. Maintain good suction and have long term reliablity
3. budget is $500

Can this be done ?

I used to think mobile, but...

after getting a stationary DC, with a lot more power than most mobiles, and mounting it outside under its own little covering, running duct inside to flexible tubing so that I can connect up my tools as I use them, gave me a much better dust collection.

If you can install a bigger DC, run duct in the "attic" of the garage, and then have flexible connectors at certain spots, you will have much better dust collection than most of the mobile units I have used. I just upgraded to 3.5 HP cyclone that I found on craigslist for $350, that is far superior to what I had before. Right now there are some great deals, if you search craigslist, or any other ads in your area.

Good luck. I would think that your spouse would want the best dust collection, not just for the dust, but for your health as well. Sounds like you have an opportunity here. The flex tubing ain't cheap, but you might look seriously at using the cheaper drain PVC as ducting, there is a lot of research and opinions on this that you can easily find.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

I will only be using one tool at a time since I am the only woodworker in my house so a mobile unit should do fine I would think. I am leaning toward the Craftsman 1.5 hp and add a 5 micron filter bag and that will bring me in/or around $400.

Some information

Here is some good information, take it with a grain of salt. Bill Pentz is not only endorsed by ClearVue, but by Penn State Industries. He has some information that is very good. It is better to over design your DC collector, as that allows you to add on.

Here is a two HP in PA for $225: sale-fpnrz-1366455253@craigslist.org

If you must have a mobile unit here is 2 HP one in Winchester, VA for $200: sale-cejtq-1349078358@craigslist.org

Here is one in NC that you will be able to never need to upgrade. You might even be able to connect a few fittings into the main house for the wife: craigslist number 1354699853

Again, good luck.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

If you are looking for a new unit I have this one. Beware that most 110V DC draw around 15 amps and will require a separate circuit.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

I highly recommend the Delta-760. Check around for prices, Amazon had it several months ago for $289. It comes with a 1 micron bag for the top. I use a 30 gallon can as a seperator and haven't had to change the plastic bag.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

Also consider looking around for a furnace fan to make an air filter. There are several people on here that have made them and they work great. That could be placed almost anywhere and would collect the fine dust your wife is seeing. Just remember it won't work as well without you using a dust collector. As mentioned Bill Pentz has the best information about this and can be adapted to anyone's style of shop.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

Worm,
I had a customer give me a sheet ,that I will find ,with the info on a Jet 1.5 hp unit with the 1 micron bags and a ton of 4 inch hose and two boxes of fittings and blast gates. It was blue so its not brand new by any means but it looked to be slightly used.It was in good shape and if your interested I'll get the details for you.He got talked into a cyclone unit that will also probably be for sale in a couple years.I mean really,he's hiring me and my partner to do most of the work in there house so how much woodworking can he be doing?Let me know.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

One more to consider is the HF 2HP DC. Don't pay retail for it, it's not worth that.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=97869

There is a coupon in Wood and Woodcraft magazine good until Dec 15th for that machine for $139.99. If you put a wynn filter on that unit (http://www.wynnenv.com/35A_series_cartridge_kit.htm) and spend about an hour making a Thien separator for it ( http://www.cgallery.com/smf/index.php?topic=145.0) and for about $300 you have a pretty nice mobile machine.

It also has enough juice to be a stationary DC with a Thien separator before or after the blower.

I bought the HF DC last weekend and I'm using it as a stationary machine with a 55 gal drum separator after the blower and using my small Delta 1HP for a little extra boost and to catch and filter the fines.

I spent 3 or so weeks reading all I could find on the HF DC and it seems to be one of the gems that HF sells among all the other crap.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

I have been looking at the harbor frieght as well. From what I read, the one for sale now is closer to true 2hp machine then the older one.

Dan, did you go with the paper filter or the fiber filter?

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

Might want to consider this unit for $125

http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/v...p?do=ad&id=662

Add a .5 Micron Bag and a ceiling mounted air filtration system (easy to find used for ~$150) and you will be good to go with your wife's car under most conditions.

Re: Recommend me a decent Dust Collecter

I agree a cyclone will be a great addition. But, until you're ready to go that route, I can let you have my Delta 50-850 that I added 1 micron filter bags to for $250. It has a 6 inch inlet which can be reduced with a 6x4 metal reducer from Lowe's. It's had low usage and can run on 110 or 220 (set for 110v at the present).
IMPORTANT!!!. Be sure to go to Bill Penz's site and read his dessertation on dust collection and potential dust health hazards. Best info I've found.
