Several years back I purchased an old surplus Porter 8" jointer from the company my wife worked for.
They wanted to keep the motor which made no difference to me seeing as how it was 3 phase.
Hopefully I'll finally get around to refurbishing this thing this winter.
Question for you owners is what HP and speed of motor is on your 8" jointer.
I don't want to under power it when I scrounge a motor for it, also what size pulleys are on motor and cutter shaft.
TIA for any responses.

Re: Question for 8" jointer owners

Lots depends on whether you have 220 or 110 power. For me, the only way to go is 220 x 3 hp. You will never need anything more. Some will say 1 1/2 x 110 is workable. Maybe but since you have the option, go with more, not less. JMHO and YMMV. As for pulley sizes, I am not at the shop so I don't remember the exact sizes. I can look and report back unless someone else posts first.

I was kinda thinking a 220v 3hp motor but thought I would ask for opinions, hopefully I can find an old large frame motor instead of the newer motors. The speed and pulley size should factor into the equation also. Service box has plenty of room for new 220 circuit so that will for sure be the voltage.
Thanks

Wayne

Specs on my Grizzly G0490X show a 3 HP/220V/15A motor at 3450 RPM and a cutterhead speed of 5350 RPM (1.55:1 pulley ratio).

Re: Question for 8" jointer owners

My 8" Chiwanese Jointer (no name) has a 2hp motor on it and it works fine and I've never had it slow down or bog down. So if you can get a real good deal on a 2 hp motor, it will work fine, but I'd probably look for a three as long as the prices are competetive.

Good Luck,

Re: Question for 8" jointer owners

I would shoot for a minimum of 2 HP. That older unit is very likely going to have a heavier head and I would want a little more horsepower to turn it.

Re: Question for 8" jointer owners

I'm not a 8" jointer owner (I have a 12" jointer), but if you scan the specs for current 8" machines, they seem to be mostly 5000-5700 rpm.

That's what I would shoot for.

As far as HP goes, I'd want a minimum of 1.5HP - and buy that or whatever larger motor I found a good price on.
