Possible router gloat - but some questions...

EDIT - I posted again further down after DeWalt replied that they will ship the missing parts free!

Took the family to get water shoes for our upcoming May vacation (Sears has awesome ones - Lands End "Beach Trekkers") and I spy this DeWalt router on the clearance table. The tag says "as is" and I question a sales person about it and I am told it was a display and all they have is the router itself - no manual collets or wrenches, but that it will be sold as brand new as far as warranty and what not. It's a DW616, which I see is around $170 at Woodcraft. Anyway, I am going to contact DeWalt and see if the parts can be provided since I bought it new and they are missing and if I have to pay, how much. Oh yeah, I pad about $45 with tax.

The questions...

Does anyone know where I can find the manual on line?

Found it:
http://toolnet.dewalt.com/Toolnet/OM...0354BC051F.pdf

Will other collets work?

Good luck with Dewalt, I'm betting they provide them.

Re: Possible router gloat - but some questions...

Andy.

That was a great find and price!!!!

I got one of those 616's at an Ace hardware that were clearing out their Dewalt tools about a year and half ago and I paid $60 for the kit.

Collet's? I also have a DW618 3 base set and the 1/4" and 1/2" collets are interchangable between the two routers. (If that's what you were asking.) I believe all DW collets are all interchangable.

You may want to call the Dewalt service center up on Capital Blvd (near HF) and they may have the collets and wrenches there in stock or can get them pretty quick.

Oh ya. You ROCK!!!!

Re: Possible router gloat - but some questions...

I hope so. I sent an email to DeWalt support and told them I bought the last one at Sears and the parts were missing and I would rather get the parts than return it if I can. We'll see. The parts are about $50 ($30 for the 1/2" and $20 for the 1/4"), which is more than I expected. I imagine I will find out tomorrow. I will take a picture later.

Re: Possible router gloat - but some questions...

OK; it's gloatin' time!

I got the reply from DeWalt:

Response (Sharon)
Hello Andy, and thanks for using DEWALT's on-line support.

If you can supply your mailing address I will send the 2 collets and the wrench.

Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you. If your question remains unresolved or if you require additional information please update this incident.

Sincerely,

Sharon
DeWalt customer service rocks!!!

Woohoo! I sent them my address and made sure that meant the nut also. And oh yeah, I bought one of them scroll saws and when I got home I noticed the box was completely empty.

Yeah, it's a stock photo so I probably only get half credit.
But that is the router...

Consuckulations, Andy. You're still ahead about $70.

Steve
Sears.com still shows the router for $170 and I paid $45. DeWalt is sending the parts for free. Searching around, I found it as low as about $130 + shipping. So I am pretty pleased. I am especially please with DeWalt.

Re: Possible router gloat - but some questions...

Could it get better? It's now an even trade. At the risk of getting accused of taking advantage of the general public, I sold my B&D on the Raleigh CL for $45. I did link to the Amazon page where they sell new for about $70 and I did include a ShopVac adapter, a bit, a little instruction and a copy of the Router Handbook. I threw in the last two things at the last minute because the guy was not experienced. I think I got through to him about the importance of reading about the correct direction, safety procedures, jigs and securing stock.

But it's a wash - the B&D for the DeWalt.

Re: Possible router gloat - but some questions...

OK, you're all justifiably tired of the ongoing thread by now, but I ordered a bit extension from MLCS. It has a 1/2" shaft and won't bend too easily like "that bit" (nuff said), but takes 1/4" bits at the business end, so I can use some 1/4" carbide bits I already have to carve deep. I will take a picture of the new, (definitely) improved setup after that and the stuff from DeWalt arrives and do a proper gloat.

Re: Possible router gloat - but some questions...

You might want to look at some solid carbide or even just HSS 1/2" spiral end mill in the extra long length. This one should work well, but there are many other types, styles and lengths.
