You might find a used Delta on eBay or Craig's List, but the Rigid is too new for there to be too many people getting rid of them yet. If I could get a real deal I might also consider the Dewalt DW735 - but I don't like the idea of having to pay extra for extension tables and it has a reputation for the knives dulling quicker.

My 2 cents.
Charles,

Thanks for that insight about the DW735. That would be my choice except
for the price. It is a bit on the outside for me. But, you are right about
having to buy extension tables. Other comparable planers come with them
so why does DeWalt charge for theirs? All their products are that way.
Compound Miter Saw, have to buy work hold down clamps separately.

Thanks,

Archie

Based on your requirements, between George and Bas I think they pretty much covered it. Bas gave a list: "Ridgid 4330, Ridgid TP1300 (older 2-knife model), Delta 22-580, Makita 2012NB, DeWalt 734 and Craftsman 21759."

To which I would add the Delta 22-560, which is/was the precursor to the current 22-580. I think it's out of production now.

Since you have 240V service available, I'd also keep my eyes open for a used 15" Jet, Delta, Grizz (or 18" Woodmaster - see Jeremy's thread) IFF it falls in your budget. Unlikely, but could happen..again, see Jeremy's thread.

My last comment: you mentioned that the planer will need to be on a mobile base. None of the portables come with stands or mobile bases. And check out the weight of the machines if you have visions of lifting them as they generally range from 70 - 90#.

Re: Planer

I'll throw in my $.02. I have the DeWalt 734 and am very happy with it. Blade life is good, and I can lift it onto my work bench when I need it (weighs about 70+). Comes with infeed/outfeed tables, tools needed for blade change, 4" chip chute and adapter for a 2 1/4" shop vac hose. I have a Ridgid 14 gal shop vac that pulls the chips out fine (fills up fast tho).
Which ever one you buy, make sure you can get blades locally unless you buy on the net.
Does a real good job, especially for the price. Set for final cut at 1/32" gives beautifully smooth finish.

Re: Planer

If you go the used route, and find one, don't overlook the DeWalt 733. It is a workhorse and uses resharpenable knives that are easy to set.

Re: Planer

We use our DW-735 almost every day. Don't know how many bf have been through it, but certainly in the thousands. (Ivey can attest to that, as he sold us most of it in cypress!)

The planer is a "stout" little machine, knife change is easy, (we've only put in one set in over a year) adjustment scale is spot on, and the fold down tables are sufficient for our needs. Most of our stuff is 6' and shorter when it goes through the planer.

We generally take off only 1/16th at a pass although it will take 1/8 depending on the type wood.

I also have a Delta 580 and it's a good machine also, but if I were buying another planer tomorrow, it'd be the DW-735.

Re: Planer

My short list was the Ridgid R4330, Dewalt 734, and Dewalt 735. I went with the Ridgid, but any of them are a great choice. If you can get a used lunchbox from someone upgrading to a larger unit, that's even better!

Re: Planer

If you want to find anything on Craigslist in more than one location, it is fairly easy using an advanced search method in Google: For example, to find all Bandsaws on Craigslist in NC, type this into the Google Search engine:

bandsaw NC site:craigslist.org

If you leave off the NC in the search, you'll get them for the US! Because of Google's search idiosynchrocies, planer will also return occurences of planner, so you get more than you bargained for -- but, just put the word in quotes for an exact match "planer". You can vary this command for other sites, too.

Re: Planer

I have a DW733 that I have used for 6-7 years. I have ran a lot of BF through it (two full sets of kitchen cabinet, vanities, etc) and never had a problem with it. I have ran red oak, maple, popular, pine, etc. through it. The blades can be resharpened and are easy to install. The finish is really good with sharp knives. I have three sets of knives and try to keep sharp knives on hand. It has the infeed/outfeed tables and can be moved around if required. I have mine on a mobile cabinet. Dust collection is good (I use a DC). Sometimes you can find a good deal on a used one from someone moving up to a larger machine. It is loud so hearing protection is a must.
