Re: Lucas Saw Mills

IIRC Kyle's slabber is a Lucas. Maybe he'll chime in as to the Lucas' worth. As a curiosity question though (Kyle, Jeff, Scott, Ivey, etal): why do most mills here seem to be band & not swing?

Re: Lucas Saw Mills

If I remember correctly without the slabber attachment it's limited to a 6" or 8" wide board depending on the model. I also recall reading something about doubling the width by doing something with the sawhead but I don't recall what it was, so that would give you a 12 ~ 16 wide board. I think it's a good machine, it'll make some saw dust that's for sure - buy one you'll be happy you did.

Re: Lucas Saw Mills

Jerry, there are pro's and con's to swing mills versus band mills, and I know some sawyers that have both.

As Kyle mentioned, I have a Peterson swing mill. My maximum board size is 10" x 20" (x 60').

Band mills have the benefit of a thinner kerf than swing mills (better yield), and they cut pretty fast.

Swing mills work better when you have extremely large logs. I like the fact that quartersawing is easy with a swing mill too.
