How do I remove the Face plate and Spur center in the head stock of a Jet Mini Lathe Model 1014?

Thanks,

Doug

Re: Jet Mini Lathe Question

On the older versions you put the knockout rod in the holes in the spindle to stop that while breaking the faceplate loose and then turning it off. (counterclockwise) The newer 1014's have a spindle lock you can use but I still like to secure the spindle itself with the knockoutrod to avoid straining the spindle lock pin.

To get the spur out, run the knockout rod in through the handle so it is against the back end of the spur and rap it a few times. You can just slide the knockout rod in so it raps against the spur and after several raps it usually pops free. Sometimes, if its been stuck in there a while you might have to rap the knockout rod with something but don't get carried away beating on tings!

Re: Jet Mini Lathe Question

In order to avoid the face plate from getting stuck in the future, cut a thin ring of PVC pipe and put it on the lathe between it and the face plate. You can buy them or cut your own.

Thnaks for the quick reply.

Bob:

Yup. I had no idea what one was, and since I am not home right now, I have no idea if I have one. I'll check tonight. Hopefully I can figure out how to use it if I have it?

Doug,

I edited Bob's photo to illustrate where the knockout bar is inserted

If you don't have the knockout bar, a long long phillips screwdriver will work in a pinch.

Re: Jet Mini Lathe Question

Thanks George, Bob Cathy and Tom. DO I have to remove the face plate before the spur? Or can I leave the faceplate on?

Re: Jet Mini Lathe Question

Hope you got the knock out rod figured out and have one.
We use a nickel anti-seize compound to keep face plates from sticking. Works well, just be cautious not to use too much as it gets a little messy.
You can get anti-seize at most good hardware shops and a lot of automotive places. It's cheap and the bottle I bought some 10 years ago ought to last til after I'm gone.
