Does anyone have one of these? I have a lead on one for $295.00. It appears in very good shape. I already have a lathe so unless this is a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaal good deal, I will likely pass. Don't know the age so that will remain an unknown. Any info would help.

Here is Tom's review that should help. It sounds like a heck of a deal. Jim

Mike -

Sounds like a good deal if you need a lathe.

IIRC, this is the lathe that the HF 34706 is a clone of, for whatever that piece of info is worth.

Re: Jet 1236 Lathe

Mike, I have that lathe however I am a turner in training so please understand my opinion comes with very litlle actual knowledge and I have never used another lathe to compare the two. That being said, I like mine and $295 is very close to what I paid a couple of years back off Craigs list. I later added a decent chuck, an assortment of new turning tools and a OneWay grinding attachment. The extras I bought ended up costing considerably more than the lathe but sure seem to expand its possibilities - if only I knew how to use them better.

The only problem I have is that my head stock center is slightly misaligned with the tail stock. I am not sure why but probably due to the fact that I took the headstock off to lessen the weight when I moved it into my shop. I am hoping I just need to adjust it or better yet have someone that has some knowledge do it with me - hint .

Bottom line: I would do it again.

Re: Jet 1236 Lathe

Well, I bought the lathe. It is a small upgrade from my old one but the one distinct advantage is it has the variable speed function whereas my old one has the change the belt feature. I got it to the shop yesterday and dismantled my old one. Tried it out on a piece of dogwood and it seemed to work very well. In talking with the previous owner, he told me he only turned a few little bats on it and then lost interest. Two sets of tools came with it, neither of which are high quality ones. A Richard Raffen tape came with the lathe (VCR). Since I can write this off the shop taxes, I think it was money well spent.
