I recently posted my 2 contractor style table saws for sale in preparation for buying a cabinet saw. Well the deed is done (in 3 days! I must have priced too low ).

Now for the problem. How do I get the box in my garage? I am considering a G0691 from Grizzly. I know they offer "lift gate service" but I honestly don't know what that means. I will call tomorrow and talk to the their sales but I was wondering if anyone had first hand experience.

Otherwise what am I looking at? Renting an engine hoist?

Thanks!

Re: How to unload a 500+ lb box?!

Also, check to see how many boxes it comes in. My Jet cabinet saw (500lbs total) came in four boxes : The base and basic top, the cast iron wings, the extension table, and the fence. The heaviest box was about 250 lbs which wasn't too hard to handle with a friend. I had it loaded on a pick up truck and handled it from there.

Good luck,

Re: How to unload a 500+ lb box?!

My grizzly planer was delivered by Overnight. They called to alert me. The truck had to park out in front of my house where he could get off the road. We used 2 long 2 x 10's to slide the crate (slowly and carefully) out of the truck (no lft gate) and into the bed of my pickup. We moved the pickup around back to the shop and used the planks to slide it out of the truck and into the shop. It weighed just under 500 lbs. my son and I were able to move it without any problems. We did tilt the crate here and there to let it pivot where necessary.
Then I had help from 3 folks here to lift it off the floor and onto it's stand. My son and I would never have managed that by ourselves. Thanks Sawduster et al.

Re: How to unload a 500+ lb box?!

if you aren't used to deliveries or the company, it would be worth a phone call to see what they are intending. We have had everything to both extremes when we had things delivered to the fire stations. A hose dryer that weighs 900 pounds in a box that had less than a foot on any side was a bear to unload. The box had to come 7 feet out without tipping more than 4 inches. That driver just wanted to get on the road and wasn't happy about waiting for a truck from another station to come for manpower. Others have gone so far as handtrucking into the building and helping us unpack items. We had a 55 gallon drum of foam (about 440 pounds) that one driver unloaded that impressed me (and saved our backs). He threw down three old tires and rolled the drum out the back and onto the tires. The drum hit the tires and bounced upright onto its bottom.

Re: How to unload a 500+ lb box?!

I had a jointer delivered the same way. Lift gate service. The driver used a pallet jack to move it into my shop. A little tip and you are on your way. As far as the table saw goes, it will probably be shipped without the wings attached. Just break down the box, and the unit with the cabinet and motor is not that bad to move. A couple of guys in the neighborhood can take care if it. Myself and two other friends lifted my Steel City saw off the back of my truck into my shop. Hope this helps. If you need help, let us know and we can be there...MK

Re: How to unload a 500+ lb box?!

I bouht my brother's woodworking equipment. He lived near Orlando. I pulled the largest U-haul trailer I could rent. With a little help from my brother, we physically moved and loaded everything. I was able to get everything into my shop alone, using a hand truck, except for the Jet cabinet saw with router table extension. I disassaembled it in the trailer, then got 2 friends to help me wrestle the remaining carcas into the shop. Word of advice, don't try to move a floor model Jet drill press on a handtruck by yourself. If I weren't so far west of you, I'd enjoy giving you a hand.

Not to hard, just takes some planning

I received the G0690 a few months ago. The cast iron wings and rails were in separate boxes. There is no way for delivery truck of any size to get down our dirt road and up the gravel driveway.

The cargo distribution center loaded the pallet in my trailer. I then strapped it down really well and headed home for 100 miles.

The boy and I were able to tip the crate to place 2x4s under it and place 1" dowels I had laying around. He then slowly let out the rope holding the top while I rolled it out the back and down the boards. Really was more stressful than it turned out to be.

Once on the garage floor, we cut away the box and crate, getting it down to the pallet. The saw is bolted to the pallet with 2 bolts. I was able to reach them through the pallet and in between the pallet boards. When done, the boy and I again used our tipping and blocking technique to raise it up high enough to roll the new mobile base under it. Building the saw then on the base went smooth.

Good luck.

Re: How to unload a 500+ lb box?!

I ordered the saw (G0691) yesterday. Crossing my fingers it gets here before next Wed. I did get lift gate service and with all of your helpful advice I believe I will be able to manage it. But if anyone wants to come see an unboxing let me know .

Too bad I won't be able to be there, I have this "work" thing during the week. But please take plenty of pictures! Nothing like tool unboxing to get everyone in the tool-holiday spirit Hope you got your supply of rags and kerosene at the ready.
