Well, I have quite a few mortises to do for my current project and the thought of drilling all of those holes with my drill seemed pretty excruciating, so I decided to get a drill press. I got the cheapo Ryobi 10" one because that's all I can afford right now.

I have been using the Gillette Mach 2 for many years now and was happy with that. So I'm in the grocery store the other night looking for refills and I think they had either run out or phased them out. So standing there looking at my options, it was either go down to the "hotel raisers" that have one blade, or upgrade to the "Fusion", which has 5 blades. Yes, 5 Blades. I've always wondered what the deal was with the number of blades on raisers these days. Two blades is good enough for me. But I've noticed a trend in the last ten years of so that the number of blades has increased from 2 to 5. At that rate, in the year 2018, we will be shaving with raisers that have 8 blades? In 2028, 11 blades? In 2058, 20 blades? What gives? Anyway, I actually felt like I was buying a tool or something when I bought this thing. So I figured I might include it in this gloat. (photo is from the internet)

Thanks,

Trent

Nice drill press, beats the heck out of trying to hold a drill perfectly vertical. Reagarding the multiple blade razors, at least one of the router bit makers has started marketing bits with 3 instead of 2 cutting wings. Hopefully this will not start a wacko trend like the razors :

Introducing the new Acme Carbide Company 28 wing chamfer bit!! For the smoothest edges yet

I started a cordless motorized razor 12 years ago and it is still working fine. I guess you could say it has around 60 blades, but I would have to count to be sure.

I'm sure it has saved me time and money over the years. Hard to say just how much.

Nice drill press! Much better than my Skill that was $15 at a yard sale.

I love those little drill presses. I just bought a delta of CL a few weeks ago. I'm currently working on a little table for mine. I'll snap some pics and see if its something you might be able to use.

You suck! That's a pretty decent drill press, certainly good for making mortises. Don't forget to pick up a set of Forstner Bits next time you're at the Harbor Freight or Woodcraft (they go on sale all the time)

More blades give you a smoother finish. This is especially important when shaving end-hair (as opposed to long-hair). You get less tearout with five blades. The only downside of the dispose-a-blade system is that you pay far more for the blades than the razor. You may want to invest in a shelix shaving head if you plan to...wait...are we talking about planers or razors

I've been using the Mach 3 for a while, it works great but I'm tempted to go Neander and use a straight razor. How manly is that!

Trent, SUCKAGE for the drill press gloat. That should make things easier!

Sorry but you get nothing for the razor gloat. The 5 blades is a marketing ploy like so many others. It's easier to justify a price increase by anouncing a "NEW and IMPROVED" version than simply increasing the price of the 2-blade version. They actually had a 3-blade before the 5-blade came out. You can still find the refills for your old one. You might have to look in different stores though.

Think about your HP printer you got for $100 or less. Everyone says "boy I got a great deal", until they have to buy the ink. The ink refills disappear after a while and then you have to buy another printer and the cycle starts again.

Good luck on your project,

Nice drill press, I just got a firestorm on clearance from lowes a couple of weeks ago. So far I have enjoyed it.

Trent that's hilarious that you would post something about razors today. My wife just came home from the store after stocking up on her favorite razors. She commented on she now understood why I have a beard. Think of the savings I realize. I have a $19.95 beard trimmer, that I use around once a month if I need it or not. I bought it 10 years ago, when I first started wearing a beard.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

I've thought about a straight razor a time or 2 but there's 2 problems:
1. LOML & I don't always see eye to eye - too tempting for her.
2. I take Baby Aspirin to thin my blood & I'd probably bleed to death the first time I tried it.

BTW the Ryobi looks like a pretty decent drillpress. I think a shop needs a bench drillpress a lot of times for wood & small metal stuff anyways. Sometimes floor models are just TOO big.

Thanks! Yeah, I could see that for router bits, but I mean, I'm just shaving my neck. How many blades do I REALLY need?

Mike,

12 years? Now THAT'S the kind've longevity I'm looking for in a razor!

Wes,

Thanks, I'd definitely like to see some pics. I'm looking at moving my shop in the next few weeks and I'll have to build several tables/etc.

Thanks Bas. I do have HF here but no Woodcraft. I'll have to venture over there and look for them.

Randy,

You're right. It is a vicious cycle!

Tracy,

I think the Firestorm and the Ryobi are pretty much comparable. HD was just on my way to work so I stopped there. Glad to know you enjoy yours.

Dave,

I've had a beard for over two years now and doubt I'll ever shave it. It saves SO much time. I do trim it with the clippers about once a week though. I'd love to let it get really long, but unfortunately, that isn't very "professional" for a marketing guy who wears a button down shirt and slacks to work. I wish I could grow it out a little. Maybe I can take a month's vacation sometime and just go "ZZ Top" for a while and see how that looks (insert very long bearded smiley face here).

Thanks!

Trent

I've used a Mach II for years. The only reason I do is because I can't find blades for the Trac II I still have. Started using that one in college. I have a beard and use a trimmer once a week but still use the razor every day. Blades are a rip off and a pox on a 5 blade razor. I tried a free sample and gave it to LOML, I hated that thing. Shaves good but hard for me to tell where it's going to cut and not cut around the beard.

Nice score on the drillpress.......YOU SUCK!

Suckage granted on the drillpress. I had a very small Delta drillpress for several years and to be honest it had less runout than my large floor drillpress. You're gonna love it.

As for the razor gloat question...you been hangin' around Bas lately??

I'm with DaveO on this one. I shave on Easter and our anniversary. Maybe Christmas if she's lucky.

That is a nice little drillpress; better than the cheesy little thing I have. And I (seriously) want to suggest you consider gettting an attachment for it that has about 100 sharp edges:
