This is what a $20 Rockwell bandsaw looks like when you get it:

This is what it looks like after you work on it an hour here and there for about 6 weeks. I probably have 30 hours or so in it:

I'm happy with how it's turning out; still have a few things to finish.

Thanks for looking,
J

Great job!! I love the red accents!!: eusa_clap

Was it all wire wheel and sandpaper or did you use some electrolysis?

Re: gloat? : $20 14" Rockwell bandsaw

The original bearings appear to be good. I did have to put thrust bearings on the upper and lower guides as they were missing. The original motor (1/2 HP Leeland motor with oil ports on each end) still runs good. I've yet to put a blade on it as my other saw uses a different blade length. Both wheels turn smoothly with no discernible vibration. To clean it up I used a combination of electrolysis, sandblasting, wire brushes, sandpaper and lots of elbow grease.

I started to paint it all the original smoke gray that was the Rockwell color, but to be honest I didn't like the look of the smoke gray. And it seemed kind of drab. So I went for an art deco inspiration using classic gray and banner red. And very soon I believe it will have a nice patina of sawdust.

Thanks for looking,
Jay

Re: gloat? : $20 14" Rockwell bandsaw

Wow!, that's one heck of a clean up job. Congrats and Well Done.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with Red and Gray (go wolfpack!)....you have to admit it'd look pretty silly all in any shade of blue.

Re: gloat? : $20 14" Rockwell bandsaw

Looks awesome!

I was wondering if a sandblaster was involved but you answered that question. I agree with the red - looks really cool.

Those older tools are built like battleships, so it ought to last a lifetime and then some!
