Talking Gloat

I have a small gloat, and I feel I should share some pictures. Well, it is small for me. This one is 900 lbs.

Here is the Powermatic 20" planer I got from the Craigslist posting that Doug Robinson listed. My sincere thanks to Doug as I would not have seen it without his listing. I think this one is almost the same as FredP's. It includes the Byrd shelix head, solid infeed and outfeed tables, and POS built in wheels, but they get the job done.

Byrd shelix, 5 HP 220 Volts 30 amps (it definitely requires 30 amps as it tripped a 20 amp outright), and 20" planing width.

One thing that I found odd was they put rollers on the top, but if you run your dust collection hose to it, it kind of gets in the way, but still it isn't too bad.

As for the shelix head, I will say "OH MY"!!!!! It is soooooo quiet and sooooo smooth. The planer has 4 speeds where you have to change a gear and chain to get the slowest speeds so I went ahead and did it. I have planed probably a 100 BF of maple so far and it is baby smooth. Did I mention it was quiet? My dust collector is now louder than the planer. If you are considering a shelix, go for it. I would have never believed the difference.

Still working on the wide belt sander. LOML did ask how much tonight. Then immediately said NO WAY......

Re: Gloat

Dang Travis that is sure pretty. Your old 15" planer is looking mighty tempting to me after having to trim a cutting board down to fit into my 12.5" and listening to the shreek of it's motor. I just wish it came with indexable knives

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Nice score Travis!! If your dust collection was on the floor then the rollers would be okay. The pic below shows what I did with my top rollers, but I think your 15" wouldn't fit up there, although you are tall enough to use it !

Re: Gloat

Very nice Travis but I cannot see why the hose cannot have a 90 inserted to offset dust pickup to return the rollers to usability

Travis! BUDDY!!!

Awesome score man. That thing looks brand new. Guess what - with a planer sled, you can now joint boards up to 20" wide!!!

As to your other tool on your list: Ask permission for a narrow-belt sander instead. Then tell her the upgrade was only xxx dollars. The old bait'n'switch

Nice pickup bro', the gold looks good . On the downside, me thinks that you may be running out of room.

Good luck with it,

Jimmy

Re: Gloat

NICE SCORE! That's a great setup and the Byrd makes the deal (considering you bought the whole thing for less than the cost of the head)

Jointing boards up to 20" wide!!!! Cool!!!! That means I don't need my 16" jointer anymore doesn't it? In all sincerity, that was one excellent write up you did on the step treads though. You going into technical writing?

As for the wide belt, she asked me how much tonight. Of course I told her more than it was and got the "are you crazy, are you nuts". Sooo, that is progress.

As for changing the angle on the piping, that may not be a bad idea. I have been told I will not be keeping the Grizzly. Same story as when I bought the Felder. Had to get rid of the PM-66.......

To Jimmy's point, the shop is getting tight. I have right much stuff I need to sell, just haven't done it. Oh well, at least it doesn't spoil.

Re: Gloat

FredP did something similar to that. I wouldn't mind having a spare planer like that, but I know what I will hear then.

2 bandsaws
2 planers

Why do you need two of such and such. How many routers do you have? How many drills do you have? You can't use but one at a time so explain to me why you need more than one.

Then, I look at her, shrug, walk off and try again later.

Selling takes too much time. Taking pictures, listing the items, replying to inquiries.

Just give it away. I'd like to put my name first on the list and I'll accept everything you have

Sure, I will swap you. Be sure to include the PM3520B and I will include my HF lathe as part of the trade.

You have no room to talk. I have been in your shop and I am amazed that you can assemble a queen size bed in there. How many shop vacs do you have? Was it 3 or 4?
