I need some help figuring out how to do something.

I have a phase converter that I have 220 volts 30 amp circuit that I have number 6 wire running to it. It is a Kay industries MA-R and has an on-off switch on the side.

I want to be able to turn it on and off by remote control. I am thinking I need a contactor/relay on the input side of the single phase 220V connection that is rated for a minimum of 220 volts and 40 amps, but what do I do for remote activation?

X10 wireless? My dust collector has a remote control magnetic starter (a key chain remote) and it works well. Can I get one of those? If so, where? Or is there a cheaper alternative?

All advice, suggestions, and comments appreciated.

If you pick up a relay that the coil is a 110v then you could use a x10 system to power the coil contacts.

What does the converter switch do? Does it break contact on both 220V input wires, or is there an internal relay?

I may be off base, but couldn't you use a Long Ranger? My DC is 220V and I plug the Long Ranger box (220V version) into the wall outlet and the DC into the box. The remote turns the box on and off.

Lone ranger won't handle the amperage I need. I need 30 or 40 amps (can't remember which), and I believe a Lone Ranger at 220 volts tops out at 20 amps.

Tom, I think the contactor is just a fancy name for a relay, but I am not sure. I was thinking along the lines of having an x10 remote do the 110 volt thing to close the relay/contactor to provide current to the phase converter.

If you want it on the infeed side of the phase converter you need a 220v contactor relay with a 110 v coil. Connect the relay in line between the 220v power source and the phase converter. Now you can plug the two wires from the 110v coil into the Long Ranger. The remote will now pick the coil and open or close the relay. Its like magic - on and off.

Looking through Grainger I found this, which I think will work. You would use the X10 to power the coil.

Tom has you headed in the right direction -- For my ClearVue Cyclone 5 HP motor control, I'm using a Fasco H230B 30A contactor with 120V coil (under $20) that is triggered by a low cost wireless remote from Ace Hardware that cost about $25. Here is a low cost source for the Fasco H240B (40-amp model) that is less than half the price of the Grainger/SquareD model or if you need 50 amp capacity on your 220V feed, you could use 2 poles of a 3-pole H350B.

Between Tom, Rob, and Dino I think I know what to get and to do.

Next question, enclosures, any place for good prices?

My stuff is in Carlon plastic enclosures available at the BORG or Lowe's. I just drilled appropriate holes for the bushings with a Forstner bit. You can also use metal enclosures if you prefer.

Rob, what is the difference between the B and the C model?

Fasco's contactors come in at least 3 coil voltage versions. An H230A is a 2 pole/30 Amp/24 volt coil; H230B is the same with a 120 volt coil and the H230C has a 240 volt coil. The H350 series are three pole with the same 3 suffix letters in the same three coil voltages. On the link I gave you, you can click on any of them to get more details.

I did click the links, but I didn't catch the difference in coil voltages. Makes total sense to me now and you are right, the price is very good!!! Thanks for the links!
