choose betwee a Craftsman or Jet bandsaw

I have an oportunity for either a 12 inch Sears Craftsman band saw with tilting blade and large surface platen, or a 13.5 inch jet band saw model JWBS-14. Which one would you chose and why.

JWBS-14

In my experience, Jet makes a better product. Though the newer Craftsman are supposedly built along side the Rikon, I'd still pass in favor of Jet for a couple more years.

Please pass on the Craftsman! The Jet is a far better machine. The JWBS-14 is sized as an industry standard. Many more accesories for it and replacement parts later on done the road won't be a problem. Standard size blade, riser block for it too. More power!

Based on my past experiences with Craftsman tools, you could'nt run fast enough to give me one. Go with the Jet.

Re: choose betwee a Craftsman or Jet bandsaw

I owned a Craftsman Band saw with a tilting blade several years ago. I loved the tilting blade idea but the saw was useless. It was impossible to get the blade 90 degrees to the table. Pass on it and get the Jet.

Even if the Craftsman is for free,I would still go for the Jet.

Re: choose betwee a Craftsman or Jet bandsaw

I know it's real popular to bash Craftsman but I have to speak up in strong support of my little 10" Craftsman bandsaw. It is a top notch tool and keeps me from having to constantly swap blades on my 18" Rikon. I know their power tools are not on the same level as the Powermatics, etc but this one is definitely an exception.

If you compare this:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...Name=Band+Saws

with this:
http://www.rikontools.com/productpage_10-300.htm

they are essentially the same saw with the exception the Craftsman version has a bigger cast iron table. The Rikon has a smaller cast aluminum table.

The Craftsman was only $80 which sealed the deal. John Skipper enabled this through a buddy of his near Spindale who runs a Craftsman re-sale store. I only needed to adjust the wheels to be co-planer.

Re: choose betwee a Craftsman or Jet bandsaw

Can't say about the Craftsman, but I have an early 90's JWBS-140S and think it is a great saw. The new ones appear to address almost everything I'd upgrade on my saw... better tires, a quick release, stronger spring, and better dust collection. Few bandsaws have a big enough table, you'll want to add supplementary area but that is easy enough with a piece of melamine or MDF.

I had a 10" Craftsman bandsaw for years that did a good job once I found out it wouldn't work without Timber Wolf blades. That said, I now have a Powermatic 14" bandsaw and the only reason it is not a JET is the deal I got on the Powermatic.
Save yourself a bunch of problems and get the JET. It is a better saw right out of the box and down the road when you want to add cool stuff to it, you can actually find cool things for the JET.

Re: choose betwee a Craftsman or Jet bandsaw

Until a month ago I owned BOTH of these saws - sold the Craftsman last month. Does that tell you which I prefer?
