Hello friends,
I have a couple hand-planes that are badly rusted and I am going to electro-clean them. It will take whats left of the original japanning off and I am just going to use some good paint on it. I just cant remember which paint to use. (I used paint on my number 7, it was rusted very bad) I remember someone here recommended an engine block paint that ford made, just cant remember which one. Anyone remember? Thanks friends.

Re: HandPlane Paint

I use gloss black epoxy on mine, I know it's not like the original but they are to use not to sit in a museum.

Re: HandPlane Paint

Mike,
Its funny that you said you use the epoxy, I cant find any Dupli-Color over here so I picked up some of the Glossy Black Epoxy to refinish some of the handplanes. What is your experiance with it? How well does it hold up? Thanks for your help.

Re: HandPlane Paint

The one plane I used it on was in pretty bad shape, I took it to work and had it bead blasted every where that was rough cast and not machined.

The epoxy is doing great! I taped up the machined areas and sprayed two coats about an hour apart.

It was in worse shape than the one behind it in this picture. It still looks about the same now.

Re: HandPlane Paint

Thanks for the pictures Mike, I have a small sandblaster that I hook up to my compressor. I plan on finishing up a couple hand planes this month. Thanks for all of the information, I just wanted to make sure that it was a dependable finish. Your plane looks great, when are you going to do the next one?

Mike - That looks really nice. Guess I need to get motivated.
