Well hypothetically speaking if a guy was to have to go to hand tools to do his woodworking what hand tools would a guy need to do the woodworking. The reason I pose this question is this, in my future I may not have the capability to have a full shop (the tools may have to be stored for a while!) I have quite a few hand planes in my arsenal right now, but am thinking of going Neanderthal while I have no shop space. I am sure I will miss my big machines, but I also look forward to making projects solely by hand. So if you have some experience for me let it roll.

I am looking at doing everything by hand, milling all of my future lumber from hand tools, down to sharpening with stones.

This is what I have on hand now for hand tools.

Bailey 3,4,5,6,7
Stanley #80
Stanley #78 (also a second one with no Manufacture name Just USA)
Stanley #110
Sougard Block Plane (Re-Badged Miller Falls 60 1/2)
Stanley #12
Stanley #66
Crown Gents dovetail saw
Marking Mortising Gauge
MKII Sharpening system (no stones yet, any suggestions on good water stones?)

Just purchased a 19?? D-7 26in Cross cut hand saw with 8 point per inch tooth spread, I paid 9.99 for it, it is straight and in good condition. The horns are in good shape with normal wear. It does need a sharpening though. Hopefully it proves to be a good saw.

I am thinking of making a scrub plane out of a #5 that I have (need guidence on that if anyone has done it).
I am also thinking of buying/making a fold down bench (I think it was in Lee Valleys new mag) so that I can store it in the limited space that I will have.

I am also pondering the idea of making a highspeed tool chest to store all of these tools. So really all I will be taking is the new folding bench and my tool chest. So if I haven’t bored you to tears throw some ideas my way. Have a blessed day friends.

Planes are nice, but don't forget, you will need saws and chisels and hand drills (brace and bits and a hand mixer style). And, I'm sure you already have the other stuff such as squares, sanding blocks, marking tools and such mundane stuff as screwdrives, awls etc.

I do have a set of nice marples chisels, also quite a few squares and such. Just looking at what others suggest. I am going to take my power drills, but an old hand powered will be cool too.

The bench I saw was in the Garrett Wade mag. Its going for 600.00 so I may just steal the design.

Don't know how you expect to mill a log into lumber with a few hand planes and sharping stones, but I guess where there's a will there's a way...

Thanks

People did it for many years, have to add a ax, some wedges, and an adze, unless of course you want to set up your own pit saw!

That's a neat looking bench, but I'd do like you and copy the design. A couple good hand saws will be a must. Might want to see about finding some mortise chisels too.

Michael, Looks like you've got a good start down the slippery slope. In addition to the already mentioned tools, I would add a couple of spoke shaves. I get a lot of use out of them. you asked about converting a #5 to a scrub plane. I did exactly that and it works just fine. All you need to do is grind the blade to about a 3" radius and set the mouth wide.

Now of course that is not feasible, I will mill boards in the rough to final dimensions though. Basically I will not be using my jointer, table saw, band saw, and planer. I also will not be doing larger projects, because of how long it will take. I will leave milling the trees up to you bro.

Ahh Mortise chisels, and some dove tail chisels as well. All of the information is great. I am taking notes friends and will be hunting stuff down. Thanks a million

Michael,

If you would like to stop by sometime I can show you what hand tools I have acquired. We could also talk about some of my lessons learned to save you from spending money on tools you may not need. It will give you a chance to try some of the common tools that you may not have. Let me know if you're interested. Look me up at work in the address book.

Doug

I used an adze once (notice I said ONCE) and I thought QS'ing was wasteful. You really have not seen waste untill you butcher a log with a adze. I must admit it did make some big chips, might be a good way to stock the BBQ grill.

Mike, very cool link friend. I will have to draw up some plans. I tell you friends we are so blessed to have such a great melting pot of woodworking minds.

I think a couple of those Sawhorses and a fold down bench and I would be set. Will have to talk it over with Doug and see what his thaughts are.
