Re: What's wrong with this construction?

It's definitely about the clips. I decided to use Z-clips to ensure the top wouldn't split when the wood moves. The clips at the top of the picture are correct (at least, I think they are), because as the wood expands across the grain the clips will slide in the groove.

But I also put Z-clips on the other two sides. That doesn't really work, now does it? Not as bad as a glue joint, but there is not much "give" here. Or am I wrong now, and was I right then?

(BTW, I'm not terribly worried either way...the table is inside in stable humidity, the wood is QS, and the thing is encased in poly...but still)

Re: What's wrong with this construction?

Hey Bas

I have used the Z-clips but normally I use figure 8's (two per apron). The trick is not to over tighten them. I leave them a little loosey, goosey so the top can move if it needs to.

Did you ever find the matting clip for the extra screw? (We Canadians can still count ya know!)

I thought you were were talkin' 'bout the rotten wood you used! ....Sure is nice spalting.

I think that you are good to go!

Re: What's wrong with this construction?

IMO the ones on the sides are needed as well, but they should be fastened 'loose' and not tight into the kerf. If the wood moves cross grain the end grain on the stretcher will inhibit its movement unless you let the front & back float too. I think I would have used biskit cuts in the stretcher & rail to put the clips in to avoid weakening them with a full length kerf.

Re: What's wrong with this construction?

The clips on the sides (long) should not be jammed into the groove. Leave 1/8" or more gap so the wood can move and not bottom out on the clips. The ends (short) can be placed farther in but not bottomed out. As stated, don't make any of them death grip tight.

I sense a pattern here Of course, I subscribe to the school of thought of "it ain't right until it's mighty tight" (not to be confused with "keep cranking till you hear creaking"), so this is gonna be tough to accept... I think I'll loosen a few of the screws just a tad, to give it some room.

Thanks everyone.
