LOML needs a better table for the TV, DVD player, and DirectTV box in our spare room. I made this from reclaimed oak. This is my first go at making flat panels; I can feel some rise in the top of the upper panel.

Well, I clamped and glued everything together. When using C clamps, I used oak scraps to prevent marring of the wood. I got the usual marks from the Jorgenson clamp pads, and this time from my kwip-grip clamps as well. I have rubbed DNA on those spots, but they persist.

Should I go heavier with the DNA, or can I finish sand the spots off?

For the finish, if it warms up for a day, I will use some leftover Waterlox Original Sealer and Finish (hopefully it hasn't gelled, as I put some marbles in the can to eliminate air space).

Looking real good Tom, I do like the design. I'm looking forward to seeing it with the finish.

Re: TV Table

220 grit sand paper should remove the clamps spots. It is a nice piece, but I'd suggest you relieve the top and shelf edges with a 1/8" roundover bit or sandpaper.

Re: TV Table

I thought about that, Rob, and chucked up a 1/8" roundover bit. Cuts on a test piece were rough, and I slacked off and didn't clean the bit an re-try.

Forgot to mention: on the ends, I wanted a rustic look so I didn't miter the trim pieces. I cut 1/4" notches in the legs to accommodate the lower shelf. I have cross supports at each leg, and across the middle of each shelf.

Re: TV Table

those marks usually indicate the wood is not dry or you have something on the clamp pads. If it's the former you will get a lot of movement as it dries out. is it possible the wood has been outside recently? If it's water in the wood it should dry up in a few days [at least on the outside].

Re: TV Table

Nah, Fred, the oak has been planed and in my basement shop for the past 3 months. The basement is not damp.

Re: TV Table

Nice job, and with free wood to boot, can't beat that.

I second the suggestion to round edges on your top and shelf.

Re: TV Table

Are the marks just spots on the surface or are there actual depressions in the surface?

David, they are marks on the surface.

Re: TV Table

Are the spots shiny? It may not have anything to do with the clamping pads, just caused by pressure. Light sanding should take care of those spots.
Nice looking table!

Re: TV Table

Yes, Bas, the spots are shiny, having an oily look to them. Rob clued me in that a little gentle persuasion with some 220 grit should be the fix. I hope to get down into my evil scientist laboratory to try that experiment Monday night.
