When I bought the Ridgid Oscillating/Belt Sander I finally had a good excuse to build a sanding station. I took a damaged cabinet that my son got for me at his place of work that was headed for the landfield and cut it down and converted it to a nice sanding station. It already had rollers on it. Not great rollers but the price was right. I had to rework drawers from two different style cabinets to get four drawers and take the sides from another scrapped cabinet to make the doors. I made the wood pulls and used rare earth magnets for door catches. The only cost was the price of the rare earth magnets that I had on hand. I got a nice sanding station and kept some nice red oak out of the landfield.

That looks great and the price was definitely right.

Well, you really made good use of a free cabinet. I like your sanding station. Great organizer.

Man, you are just cranking out the projects like clockwork.

Your sanding station looks great. I think it is much harder to redesign than to start from scratch, and you did an incredible job.

I would love to know the details concerning the rare earth magnet catches. I have read about them, but never installed them. What diameter magnets did you use and what depth did you recess them? Is there any way to adjust them if you are not happy with the holding power?

Amy, I used 3/4" and recessed them just enough to leave the top surface a little proud of the wood surface. I used a dab of 5 minute epoxy to glue them to the wood. I used a flat washer on the opposite side for the magnet to catch on to. I believe if the doors were heavy you would need to use a magnet on both sides to get the holding strength. I guess to adjust the holding power you would need to remove them and adjust the depth or adjust the opposite side metal surface or use two opposing magnets for a strong hold. This is my first time using them for door catches. I have been wanting an excuse to try them. They make a clean snag free door catch and they come in a varity of sizes.

Nice job Dolan, I have thought about getting that Ridgid sander. Now if I do I have a good Idea for making a sanding station.

Mike, I am really enjoying the sander. My only complaint is the tracking on the belt is really touchy getting it just right. But then it could just be the idiot turning the tracking knob. Maybe as I use it more I will get the hang of adjusting the tracking. I usually over adjust. Otherwise I think it was money well spent. And the sanding station is working great. All my supplies in one place plus my belt sander and ROS in the lower drawer.
