Router table fence

Not feeling so well so I've been in the shop staring at stuff. I'm tryng to finish my version of Norm's router table. His plans show the fence base and face to be 35 1/2 and 35 inches in length. That extends it the full distance of the top. Tell me why I can't use a piece of MDF I already have but that's only going to give me 31 inches in length. Am I really going to be sorry not having that extra 4 inches?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Router table fence

I don't have Norm's table, but mine is 32" and I've never felt I needed any more.

Under other circumstances, having an additional four inches may have made for interesting times.

Re: Router table fence

Many folks that have built this table do not always follow Norms plan for the fence! The fence I made is "my version" of Pat Warners Micro-Adjustable fence. Here's a link for reference: Micro-Adjustable Router Fence

I really like the Micro-adjust feature, especially with the HF dial-inidcator. I can refer you to pictures of my fence as soon as Steve moves the Wooworking Gallieries photo's.

PS. I didn't realize the link above requires membership. Here's another link to Pat's router table and fence: The Router Table

Re: Router table fence

It is nice to have the fence go the full length of the table IMO. Not a necessity, but at times can be nice when measuring trying to line things up. Requirement? No, not IMO.

I built Pat Warner's fence also and could not be more pleased.

Re: Router table fence

Tom, Hope you're feeling better today.

I had the plans near my computer and took a look and then went out to the shop to look at the table top. The only thing that I notice that might be a concern is fitting the fence to the top. The slots in the table top for adjusting the position of the fence are 29" apart. If you have already cut these slots, you will find that matching holes in the fence base will be close to the ends. If you can work around this, I don't think its usefullness will suffer.

Re: Router table fence

Thanks Roy. I'm out and about for a bit, but still feeling pretty punky. I don't have the slots in the top cut yet either. I actually came back in now to see if I can find some pics of others and if they've gone the full depth of the top. I think I'll just go with the 31 inches and adapt holes and everything else to match.

Re: Router table fence

Now that the Photo Gallery is up I can post some pictures of the Micro-Adjustable fence I mentioned in my previous reply.

Note: This fence does not have use slots in the table.

And here's a link to my NYW Router Table Album. http://www.ncwoodworker.net/pp/showgallery.php?cat=852

Re: Router table fence

That's a fine looking setup, Don!
From someone who is needing a RT fence, how much total travel front to back do you have? Do you find it to be enough?

I think the range is 3-4" total. My dial indicator has 1" range, but that's all you need after the initial fence setup. I can only think of one time when there was not enough range; in that case, I clamped the sides of the fence to the table top. I'm not at home right now, or I would measure it for you. In summary, I really like the micro-adjust feature.

Re: Router table fence

Man alive!!! Nice setup. It's taken me too long to build the cabinet so far. I'd be in a home someplace before I got a fence that nice built. I bet the fine adjustment is sweet!!!

Re: Router table fence

Yep, that's special Don.
I'd have to take a course before figuring out what all those knobs do

'Sorry' might be too strong of a word in my oppinion. I can say though that because I don't have a jointer I have used my router table as a jointer.

In that situation I would have fared better if I had a longer fence. The longer the fence the longer the piece of wood that can be jointed.
