Hey guys, new member here. I have enjoyed reading the posts. I am in the Winston-Salem area and I just cut down a twin-trunk Persimmon. Both trunks were around 12-14 inches in diameter at the 4ft mark.

I cut the trunks into roughly 4-to-6 foot sections and sealed both ends with sealtite from klingspor's woodworking shop.

I am new to lathe turning, but I'd like to do something with the wood. From what I hear - quartersawn is the only way to cut the wood to minimize the warping and cracking.

Just wondering how I should cut and process the logs - and if any of you guys are interested in any of the wood or trades for it.

Also, what ideas for small crafts I could make from it - my first plan is a mallet.

Thanks

Re: Persimmon

Mr.

Smith,

At that size you can quarter a section, remove the very center (pith) as it will be most likely to split, then turn a nice mallet from it.

Thanks

I would be interested in a 2 foot piece of about 12" to 14" round if it is available.
I may have some wood you may like to turn. Send me a PM and we can discuss it

Re: Persimmon

Mr Smith,
I too would like to get a piece of the trunk 14" or so long and definitely could trade/fix you up with some other turning stock.Rough turn some thick bowl shapes as soon as you can, turn it before it splits and then do the denatured alchohol soak, bag it and let it dry slowly.PM me and we'll get together.
Greg
