Hi all,
I have a new chair in progress. Actually, the wood working is done and it is ready for the finish. This is not a rocking chair, but evolved from an earlier design for a unique rocker that I may eventually make. I call this a Campeachy II chair. President Jefferson was attracted to a chair he saw in New Orleans and eventually had one sent to Montecello where his artisans reproduced the chair. He called it a Campeachy chair because it had been described to him as a chair made from Campeachy wood. That wood was probably mahogany and most certainly came from the Mexican province of Campeche, hence the name. If I had a choce, I would have made this chair from mahogany, too, but the contest requires the use of maple. This chair will be finished in an ivory lacquer with several clear coats and then it will be upholstered in a tan or green leather (I haven't decided yet which color to use. Opinions?

This chair will be my submission to the Finewoodworking build off contest. That contest says to use 17 bf of maple and make something out of it. This chair will use less than 17 bf. I made the sweeping side rails by laminating layers of 3/32 hard maple. The cross slats are maple that are screwed and mortised to the rails. The legs are also laminated. This chair features several carvings.
These volutes are repeated on the back stretcher and again on the terminal ends of the side rails.

the four feet feature are carved in a stylized Quetzalcoatl form. This is the feathered serpent of Mayan lore that are featured on the pyramids.

and then, finally, I carved a blue poison dart tree frog that will be placed between the rear stretcher volutes. I put a tree frog on each of my chairs now, to remind me that the wood I use was once the habitat of many forest creatures. Sorry for the poor photo of the frog.

Once the chair is upholstered (I have an upholster in N. Raleigh who specializes in leather auto and boat upholstery) I will gild the volutes on the side and back in 22k gold leaf.
Then the chair will be ready for submission to the Finewoodworking contest. The prizes are shop tools. I hope some of you will vote for my chair if it is picked as a finalist.
regards,
John Flanagan (Rocker)

Absolutely beautiful. A clear winner, for sure.

Love the Mayan touch, although I'd prefer a Midas touch for myself.

I've never seen a green cow, so may I vote for tan?

Elegance and talent, that's what I see
And then there's the carving, style, and airy quality
I could say more, but I'll stop now.

John,

That is truly a work of art. I can't wait to see the first place ribbon/trophy you get!

Awesome chair, John!!!!

I will definitely keep an eye out for it on FWW. It is absolutely one of a kind and a piece of extremely fine craftsmanship - and this is an understatement for sure!!!!

Very fine work indeed!

Very nice design, it's gonna be a beauty.

How is the chair fastened down to the volutes and the volutes to the legs? If I built something like that I would worry about my fat Aunt Shirley trying to rock in it and busting a screw loose. How strong is the connection?

I can't tell from the pics...it looks like there may be a flat on the top of the volute to allow glue/screw to the chair...the bottom of the volute looks like it's tangent to the leg at the point of attachment so only screwed.

I love the lines and the detailed carvings. Please keep the pics coming.

One word: Magnificent!!! I'd go with the green leather. That chair is so awesome, it can carry something out of the ordinary, and be elevated by it. Great curves, beautiful scrollwork.
