Time to post a latest project summary. In keeping with my normal pace of a project or two a year, I finally finished a memory/keepsake box for my wife. Her mom passed away at the end of April after a battle with cancer. Once we were home again, I started on the box. The top is curly maple from Catawba Hard Woods and the sides are Sapele from Rick at the Woodworking Source. My wife and I spent at least 45minutes there talking with Rick when we were there to get the board. At the time it was very cathartic. Since I do not have a band saw yet, Rick was kind enough to resaw the board I bough form him. Talk about customer service! This is not to imply that I receive anything but great service from Catawba Hardwoods. To the contrary, I was very pleased with my shopping experience there. The plans for the box were adapted from an article in Fine Woodworking #201 and a book by the same author, Doug Stowe. The box is larger than the one from FWW #201. I made it large enough that an 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper could lay flat in the box. One of the things I appreciated about the box design was that the box was made from a resawn board so that the grain on the sides would be continuous around the box. Not revolutionary for some of you that have been at this a while, but a first for me. The wood working was done with a mix of tailed and non tailed tools. Rough thicknessing was done on the planer, but the final dimensioning and surface preparation was accomplished with a LV LA jack. The LAJ was also used on a shooting board to square the parts of the box and to shoot the miters for the sides. The shooting board was another first for me. What a very cool tool/jig. The lid was laser engraved by the fine people at Etchright Engraving. Their website is at http://www.etchrightengraving.com/index.html. They were very easy to work with and very helpful with questions I had as to what needed to be done to get a good result with the engraving. The mitered splines wer trimmed with my LV LA block plane. This was easier than I feared. After sanding everything to 400, the box was finished with Watco Danish Oil as per the instructions on the can. I like the results and it was easy to apply. The lid was prefinished and sent out for engraving prior to assembly. All in all I am very pleased with how the box turned out and my wife likes the box. There are plenty of things I will do differently on subsequent boxes, but you have to start to learn some where. The biggest issue I ran into was the hinge mortises not lining up perfectly. This messed up the alignment of the lid a little bit. I think that the stops that I used on the router table were too tall and were not perfectly square to the table. A result, the mortises in the lid and the box base were not the same width. I had to do some extra work with the chisels to get everything to fit. If you have gotten through all of the verbiage, thanks for reading. Comments are welcomed and now .....on to the pictures. Lee | | Views: 238 |

To me, the straight grain at the bottom of the lid and the curvy grain at the top of the lid reminded me of the sea shore with clouds off in the distance. It seemed natural to have the text centered between the two. Lee |
