Here are some pics of my progress in the kitchen. I have milled the lumber for most of the drawer fronts and the doors. I placed some of them today to see if everything was on track. My wife sanded the face frames and painted them using a crackle technique she likes the look of. I would have preferred to replace the face frames. But, the way the cabinets were built, this would have required more talent, skill, and time than I have or want to invest in it. It took me forever to decide what kind of hinges to use. I went with the Euro style hidden hinges. I like them OK but I don't like the gap between the door and the face. I guess I will learn to like it. I don't know what kind of drawer pulls we will use. I had an extra one that I put on just to see how it looks. I's like to get some nice carved ones but they are so expensive - I don't want to spend several hundred bucks on pulls that I could use for tools. I tried making hidden bread board ends on the doors. But, I just couldn't get it to work with my talent. I put three battens on the backs of the doors using screws with over-sized holes to allow for movement. Time will tell how that will work. I intend to put several coats of poly on both sides. The doors in the pics aren't adjusted - I just stuck them up to see how it would look.

I really like the counter top, at first I have to admit, I really was unsure, but now it is really nice looking. Great job!!!!!

Looks good Michael.

I really like the way that counter top turned out too. That is quite a large project (and I thought my bookcase was a lot of work).

Re: Kitchen Progess

Thanks, guys. The top turned out to be a much bigger project than I anticipated. There are 123 different pieces in it. It has 3 thick coats of Waterlox on the bottom and 6 thin coats on top. I sanded some between coats so, I think the top and bottom are fairly even.

Tracy, I knew that I would like the way it looks - I spent a lot of time looking at images online. But, I wasn't sure how it would stand up to being used. We don't have children and my wife is a real fan of her kitchen. So, I thought I'd give it a try. So far, it doesn't have a scratch in it. I figure I will have to gently sand it every so often and put another thin coat of Waterlox on it. All of the cutting is done on the large end grain top I made on the other side of the kitchen.

I haven't posted a pic of the serving side of the top so I posted one here. I was nervous cutting the corners off but it turned out OK. I have the wood milled and some of glued up for the backsplash. I just have to finish gluing the pieces together and get it installed. If I were to do this again, I would have cut the countertop pieces long enough to cut off for the backsplash after glue up. Oh well...

BTW, our kitchen isn't usually this messy - we have stuff all over the place while the kitchen is being reworked.

Also, the large flask with the stopper and the tube coming out of it is the carbon dioxide generator for my planted aquarium. Just in case anyone wondered.

And just when I thought I'd found a "shiner!"

Re: Kitchen Progess

Yeah, I wanted to make sure that was clear. Several years ago, I made a table for my wife's African violets and herbs (for cooking). The table had four powerful grow lights on it and it was near the front window in our house. We had some gentlemen in brown uniforms show up at our door once asking what the lights were for. I showed them the flowers, basil, thyme, etc. and they went on their way.
