I was hoping to get some advice from those talented intarsia-ists who live here On the dolphin intarsia that I posted, I had glued it up to a 1/8" piece of plywood. The problem is that I have another 1/8" cherry shim that I'm using to push the front dolphin out to give it some overall depth, so it sticks out 1/4" or so and you can see the backing from an angle. How do you handle this problem??? I did cut the backing shy of the actual perimeter, but it is still showing and I need to have something back there supporting it....

Re: Intarsia Help, please - Backing Board

Hi Chris
The problem that you describe usually can be corrected by tapering the backer board slightly and then staining it with the appropriate color.
This is why it is best to use different thicknesses of wood instead of shims to get the dimensions.Hope this helps .

Chris, can you trace the outline of the dolphins and then cut a 1/4 or so insde of that line so that you want see the backer - I don't think you have back the full piece to have the support - I am no expert at Intarsia but I have seen some done that way
