Now I'm sure many of you have seen this, but it was my first. The family made a trip to Grandfather Mountain this past Friday to enjoy what was left of the fall leaves. On the way up to the swinging bridge we stopped at the store/restaurant/history building and boy oh boy did they have some amazing burl .... and some other neat stuff.
This was the burl on the tree, and after a craftsman got a hold of it and carved it out.
A cool chair and a cross section of a tree that watched our country grow!
That would have been some tough grain to follow for me a rookie.Tony

I love stuff like that. I still remember a field trip when I was a wee little guy. Don't recall the exact place but it was in Northern IL. I do recall the ranger taking a hand help plug cutter and twisting it into the base of a tree. Out came the cutter that showed every growth ring all the way to the pith. It was so cool and impacted my obsessive nature to make flat square ones out of big round ones.
When I was house hunting last week I saw a maple tree with a burl larger than that. I wanted to buy the house just to get the burl, but my wife talked me out of it.
Maybe after the house sells I'll go by and have a talk with the new owner.
