What type of hinges does everyone use for their pen boxes. I dont like the look of the regular hinges. I think they look to bulky.

I believe woodcraft carries the small barrel hinges.

Lee Valley also carries small barrel hinges but calls them brass pin hinges.

I've used barrel hinges on several small boxes and a pen box. Almost everyone sells them: Woodcraft, Woodworker Supply, Rockler, etc. They are easy to install but you will need a metric drill bit to match the hole for the metric sized hinges. You also need to chamfer the back of lid and box so it will open. Placing the barrel hinge close to the edge of box/lid reduces the amount of chamfering needed. DAMHIKT

Another option is to make a "bandsaw" style pen box.
I have made the ones similar to the type you are looking for hinges for and believe me it it far less expensive to buy them than to make them.
After subtracting the cost of the hardware and your time, ready made boxes(even with a lousy finish) can be had for $3.50.Since most boxes are for presentation only I buy my "clamshell" boxes.
That being said.
I do make boxes for certain customers.
I came up with this idea the Christmas before last because I Was told Zebra wood did not "rout" well.I found out this year it does.
This was for an order last year.
The customer liked them so much they ordered 7 more this year.

Eagle that is a cool idea for a pen box. I also like the Zebrawood.

They are actually easier to make than the ones with the higes.
No jigs to make.
No hinges to buy.
If you are making"book matched " boxes, the amount of stock needed is a a little bit more but like I said these are much easier.
